Live Well: How to Maintain Your Motivation and Live Healthy in 2014
As the New Year begins, millions of Americans have committed themselves to creating better habits in 2014. Unfortunately, the majority of these well-intentioned New Year’s resolutions will be forgotten within a few weeks! If you want to see this phenomenon in action, look inside of a gym or fitness facility during the first week of the New Year. Chances are it will be filled to capacity. But if you look again a month later, it will be far emptier.

Living Healthy: Six Steps to Stay Motivated as You Adopt a Healthy Lifestyle
We have been talking recently about the importance of developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating right, exercising, and more. As you probably know, adopting a healthy lifestyle is much easier said than done. Many have first-hand experience—perhaps a New Year’s resolution made and broken only a few weeks later, or a gym membership which you quickly stopped using, or a great new diet that didn’t last more than two weeks.
The truth is that adopting a healthy lifestyle takes hard work and commitment. It’s a process, and it requires both dedication and consistency to achieve. Today, I wanted to take a few moments to discuss the challenge of staying motivated. Below are six suggestions that I have found helpful, along with many of my patients.
1) Stay focused on the goal. The best way to stay motivated is to remember why you’re committed to living healthy in the first place. Whether it’s to lose weight, to fight off disease, to ensure that you’re alive long enough to enjoy your great-grandkids, or something else—keep the goal front and center.
2) Acknowledge progress. We all need positive reinforcement, even from ourselves. So make it a point to acknowledge progress. Whether it’s weight lost, miles run, or whatever—be proud of yourself for sticking with it and working hard!
3) Understand that failure and setbacks are “part of the game.” Failure is inevitable. You have probably heard that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, or that Steve Jobs was actually fired from Apple at one point. The point is that failure happens to all of us—so when you experience a setback, don’t let it get you down!
4) Don’t let others set your standards. At the end of the day, only you can set your standards. It doesn’t matter what magazines and billboards say, it doesn’t matter what friends say… you’re committing to a healthy lifestyle because it’s the right thing for you. Don’t bother trying to meet artificial standards—set your own standards and goals.
5) Seek accountability. Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of accountability to keep you on track. Talk to a friend or family member about your goals, tell them what you’re doing, and ask them....

In 2013, Take Ownership of Your Health and Feel the Improvement
How many things have you slated to change or improve going into 2013? January is a time to resolve what you lifted your glass for on New Year’s but today is the day to actually walk it out. And it can happen! Get your Heart right with your Health and you will be on the right track for the years to come.
Mastering or optimizing your health/life balance is a task, but not one that will exhaust your entire being. See, if you look at the health status of our community and beyond, it comes down to a common thread; people are not concerned about their health until they no longer have it. Heart disease is affecting 1 out of 2 people, cancer 1 out of 3, and diabetes is running rampant which is not really just one disease. It is a compilation of dysfunctions that degenerate your system which, put into simple terms, means it shortens your life.
To remedy these horrific diseases, we must begin by taking an inventory of how healthy you actually are. This is attained by questions that involve transparency and honesty so you can truly take your health to the next level. If you are not truthful, it is only hurting yourself. And, trust me when I say this, I used to be one that would look side-to-side comparing myself to others when it came to how healthy I was and you cannot do that because nobody has your life, your circumstances, and your story.
Questions would include knowing what you do with your time….do you exercise? If so, how much and what kind? Do you eat meals at home? If so, how much? And what types of food do you eat and at what times? How are your relationships? With your spouse? Kids? Boss? What are some things that make you stressed out? And what things de-stress you? These are just a few questions with which you can take a personal inventory that will reveal what action steps you need to implement in order to reach a higher level of functioning.
There are no right or wrong answers to these questions because they are truths that only pertain to you. Most times when I have patients fill out food logs and lifestyle assessment questionnaires, they become guilty and don’t want to turn them in to me for review. And that’s not why I have you do it. I do it for you to have your blindspots exposed so improvements can be made. We don’t improve if we don’t know what to improve. And I’m committed to making sure that you don’t take anymore of the same trips around the same mountain again and again and again….that is the true definition of insanity.
So, in a nutshell, this is the nugget to take away from this article. The only one in charge of your diet, lifestyle, and relationships is you, and the only one that can improve them is you. And to help you begin this process, we have programs that will help you with weight loss, exercise, and overall lifestyle and health management.
