Song Review: Mark Olson & Ingunn Ringvold - “Silent Mary”
Given it’s inspired by the art on SunMaid raisin boxes and at thrift stores in Joshua Tree, Calif., it’s no surprise “Silent Mary” is a bit of a puzzler.
The second single from Mark Olson & Ingunn Ringvold‘s Magdalen Accepts the Invitation (June 5) is light on melody and finds the husband-and-wife duo singing over a bed of piano, stings and a touch of electric guitars.
Time has way of changing your heart, they sing.
A bit too artsy for the general public and artsy enough to make artsy people sniff at the general public that doesn’t quite get it, “Silent Mary” is the obvious antidote to the sunnier, more-carefree “April in Your Cloud Garden” that preceded it.

Song Review: Mark Olson & Ingunn Ringvold - “April in Your Cloud Garden”
The vaunted Laurel Canyon sound of long ago re-emerges on the new single from Mark Olson & Ingunn Ringvold.
“April in Your Cloud Garden” announces the June 5 arrival of the duo’s third collaborative LP, Magdalen Accepts the Invitation, and screams sunny, California innocence with its happy-go-lucky words and music, which floats by like a wispy cloud.
The first single off of the forthcoming album by Americana pioneer Mark Olson (founder of the Jayhawks, Creekdippers) and Norwegian multi-in
Olson, the Jayhawks co-founder, and his multi-instrumentalist wife Ringvold employ traditional and exotic instrumentation to combine the folksy with the classical as they harmonize like a couple of saucer-eyed hippies.
Cinnamon tower/rainbow shower/will you see me at all?/will you see me at all?/April in your cloud garden, they sing.
“April in Your Cloud Garden” is a song that could be played alongside the Association and the Mamas & the Papas on any radio station whose playlist ends in 1969 and no one would think anything of it. It’s a total throwback; it’s also undeniably charming.

The Jayhawks made one of my favorite albums, Hollywood Town Hall, at a time in my life which cemented it in my consciousness for years to come.
Mark Olson, Marc Perlman, Ken Callahan, and Gary Louris. Benmont Tench, Charley Drayton, and the heralded Nicky Hopkins also played on it.
