A thought: whilst Birdie is wearing Milo's hoodie, Chunky realizes "o wait. ur not milo." And just straight up eats her because yum yum tasty snack (even though it tasted a little like dirt that's fine) and slithers away to find Milo.

I mean, in terms of the experiences we know they've had, Dan's reaction makes perfect sense. Dan, for all we know, could just have a pretty average life, sheltered from the possibility of death looming over his head, unlike Jake. Jake, from a young age, was treated terribly and he knows that heart disease is definitely something he has to keep an eye on. Being exposed to the idea that death is just around the corner, as long as Jake has, could have desensitized him to the topic. (1/2)
By that logic, Dan on the other hand, would be baffled by how nonchalantly Jake can bring up the subject. The thought of it alone could send chills though him. He might get physically ill because he's never gotten the chance to lay awake at night for so many years to ponder his own death, which is absolutely normal for that kind of circumstance.
