Colourbox - Sex Gun (Demo) (1984)
Not a new track, to those familiar with the band, but one generally not available. This is the earlier demo version of Just Give 'Em Whiskey, under its original name, which whilst largely similar is not the same. It appeared on one of the Pleasantly Surprised cassette releases, Dreams & Desires, credited to "Colour Box"
It also fails to appear on the alleged "complete" recordings presented in the four disc boxed set Colourbox in 2012. Having a digital copy of the set I didn't think duplication necessary, so I was all set to delete the digital copies of my existing Colourbox back-catalogue. Then I noticed not just the absences of those alternative versions that appeared on cassette and vinyl releases with specialist music magazines of the day, but also - and of more concern - discrepancies in some of the versions presented compared to the releases I already had. As I didn't have time to open up every track in a sound editor and check the old against the new I retained both sources. But I was quite disturbed that if I'd trusted the boxed set release to contain precisely what it purported to, I would have lost certain original versions as I no longer have the vinyl to copy them from.
Tempted now to post the alleged remix version of Manic from Abstract Magazine. The track with the head-turning guitar break by the young guitarist from Torch Song (one William Orbit Esq.), as first heard on the radio one evening, Peel or Jensen, long before I got my paws on the vinyl version.
