marvela: what? no i didn't. i said, "thanks, man."

dilly: do you see me as a mother figure, marvela?

marvela: no. if anything i see you as a smother figure, because you're always smothering me.

jamie: hey, show your mother some respect!

“lion’s teeth” by the mountain goats is very much a marvela song and it... makes me sad

dilly is used to being the only one awake in the morning. jamie and marvela are not morning people, and they grumble when forced to wake up early. throughout the few weeks she’s been traveling with her companions, she’s come to enjoy the mornings spent alone. usually she hunts, collects fruit, and steals bird eggs to prepare some kind of breakfast for her girls when they wake up.

but as it turns out, rona is also a morning person. that first morning, after some awkward greeting and shuffling around, they decide to go hunting together. rona is exceptional, of course, but she still manages to be impressed by dilly’s skill - she’s capable of moving just as quietly and swiftly, of felling animals just as accurately as the aasimar. together they make a breakfast, and they do all this without speaking much to each other, at least for the first morning.

as the days and morning go on, dilly strikes up conversation (rona isn’t one for small talk). rona talks a little about her experiences traveling around and defeating enemies in the name of raziel, and dilly, who rarely left the woods for most of her life, finds it all fascinating. dilly tells rona how she learned to hunt from her aunt, and rona tells dilly about the various trainers and mentors she’d had while learning to fight.

“still,” she remarked, “it would’ve been nice to have family teach me.”

the comment surprises dilly; rona doesn’t talk about her family much. but then again, neither does dilly.

they open up eventually while making breakfast. rona talks about the village she left behind. dilly talks about her aunt dying and her home burning down. rona muses that since she’s 60, many of her human family members are probably dead by now. dilly gets the sense that rona has never said this out loud to anyone before.

they create inside jokes that puzzle marvela and jamie throughout the day. they exchange quiet, amused looks when the girls bicker. when jamie gets on rona’s nerves, dilly sympathizes, but tries to remind rona that sometimes that’s how jamie expresses affection. it’s partially because of dilly that rona really starts to warm to jamie, to see behind her blase facade.

but most importantly: before marvela and jamie ever are, dilly is rona’s first real friend. before marvela and jamie ever do, dilly lets rona into their family.

dilly has to grow to like rona, because frankly she’s pretty intimidated by rona (who wouldn’t be?) and wary of her black-and-white view of good and evil. but when she gets to know rona better and learns about all of her insecurities (and how she’s basically just gigantically awkward), dilly grows really fond of her. 

rona actually likes dilly from the get-go just because dilly is so warm and welcoming and rona isn’t used to a presence like that, but she keeps her distance at first because again... she’s not used to being around people who are nice to her (;___;)

marvela, on the other hand, thinks rona is really interesting, and pretty much has to restrain herself from asking rona all kinds of questions about mount celestia, archons, mertion, and all that. she also likes the practicality of having someone really strong travel with them. and she likes that rona doesn’t take any of jamie’s shit (finally, a sensible person!).

rona also appreciates how dedicated marvela is to magic, and also how her smarts help out the party a lot. she’s actually tempted to ask marvela if she knows more about the different planes, just because she’s curious if it’s possible to travel to them, but she’s awkward and marvela’s a shit conversationalist so most of the time they just... like... hang out together in semi-awkward silence.

jamie is definitely attracted to rona from the start. she’s also thrilled at how easy it is to push rona’s buttons, which is why she likes marvela so much, but at least marvela isn’t such a hard-ass about justice and a suck-up to authority. jamie quickly learns that rona doesn’t want to play along (like dilly) or even offer an amusing deadpan response (like marvela) - she just wants to serve raziel. one track mind, much. but then jamie learns about how all rona’s wanted to do was explore the planes, and about her struggle between her two identities, and she's sort of touched by rona’s vulnerability - and usually vulnerability makes her uncomfortable, but coming from someone who seems like she’s made of stone... it’s endearing and almost sweet. and seeing rona fight is honestly kind of a religious experience (no pun intended). jamie wants to write songs about her hair flying around as she swings her swords, and shit she’s falling in love with rona, isn’t she.

rona does not like jamie. at first. she doesn’t want to deal with her nonsense, her charms, her lying - she’s not a fan of lying or deception. sure, it’s useful, but rona doesn’t approve, not one bit. but then jamie lets it slip that she doesn’t have a family (anymore?), and rona wonders if her charming personality is a front for deep, deep pain from a tragic past. turns out it is - jamie tells rona that the whole reason she’s on this mission is to find the people who killed her parents and kidnapped her siblings. rona suddenly feels very protective of jamie, defending her in fights when she can (because to be honest, jamie’s a shit fighter with no training), and she starts to enjoy the little songs jamie sings, and even her stupid jokes and quips. she doesn’t mean to fall in love with jamie. she’s not even sure raziel would be okay with her being romantically involved. but it happens anyway.

1) What is their full name, and does it have any special relevance? Alternatively, what nicknames do they have?

Marvela Keeperinn. “Marvela” kinda sorta means “marvel” in Latin? But mostly I just think it sounds cool, lol. I gave her the last name Keeperinn because her dad’s an innkeeper and I’m lazy.

2) What hobby would they like to be good at?

Hmm maybe fighting? Not really a hobby but it’d be useful for her to be better at. Also she always wants to learn more languages. But hobbies aren’t really her thing, because she can’t half-ass anything and she’s 110% about everything she puts effort into.

3) If they played dnd what race and class would they pick?

Definitely she’d still be a wizard. Maybe a Tiefling or dragonborn since they get cool magic? She doesn’t really care about being good lmao

4) If they could go back in time and change one thing, what would they change?

She would leave home sooner, like at age 5.

5) What is their favourite weapon to wield?

When she gets her Charlie Brown wand later in the story, even though it’s dinky and not as cool as her mom’s staff she loves it. Not really a weapon but she’s not really a weapon person, so.

6) If you could behove them one magical item, what would you give them?

Something that helps with roughing it, like a goblet that turns all liquid into water or a fork that makes everything edible. She kinda sucks at foraging (same tbh)

7) If they didn’t have to adventure, would they stop?

Well maybe. She wants to finish school. But I think now that she has a taste of adventure and killing shit with magic, she likes it enough that she’d keep doing it after school.

8) What do they look for in a platonic or romantic partner?

She’s... not really looking for a platonic or romantic partner? She just accidentally gets friends, lol

9) Do they trust easily?

NOPE

10) What is their favourite colour?

Black. Always looks good on her, keeps her from standing out.

11) Diplomatic or aggressive?

Hmm both? Not diplomatic necessarily, but more avoidant if she knows she can’t beat somebody. But if she’s sure she can beat you (or if you’re annoying her, i.e. Jamie), then 110% aggressive.

12) They get arrested, and thrown in jail, how do they escape?

Magic?? Idk, she’d figure it out

13) Would they leave their party for any reason?

Her original plan was to leave and go back to school as soon as she found and rescued her professor, but I think she gets closer to Dilly and Jamie over time, so that changes.

14) If they could own any creature as a pet, what would they have?

I don’t think Marvela gets along with animals. But if the animal could talk and was smart and magical and helpful and stuff, then... that one, whatever that is. And it wouldn’t be a pet so much as it would be an acquaintance.

15) How have you influenced your characters personality?

Welllllll there’s the trauma thing. Lol. But also we’re both definitely a bit hardcore about studying and being the best at everything. And we both have a tendency to be kind of closed off - especially romantically. But I can party once in a while, which Marvela definitely can’t. (Oh also we’re both butch lesbians so)

16) Do they have any tattoos? If so what? If not, do you think they would get one in the future?

Nah. She doesn’t see the point.

17) Where would they like to be in ten years time?

Very very good at magic. And... happier. Maybe having repaired her relationship with her dad.

18) What do they look like? Either description or picture.

Like me pretty much lmao. Short, dark hair. Short in general. Not fat but like... she’s got a big butt that cannot lie. Usually glaring. Rarely smiling.

19) What genre of music would they be into?

Whatever the opposite is of the music that Jamie plays. Calming music, good to study to.

20) What would be the worst thing someone could say to them?

“You’re going to turn out just like your mother.”
