I came across this picture on Pinterest and I have a lot of thoughts that I need to share. So, bare with me.
Benedict Cumberbatch, seen here at the premiere of Doctor Strange, plays the title character. By the this point, the movie was already generating positive reviews from critics and fans alike. And the movie expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making it possible for the story line involving Thanos and evolving into the next stage of the MCU and the Avengers. It is also common knowledge that Marvel was after Cumberbatch to play the title role, and delayed the release date to accommodate his schedule.
In his career, up to this point, Cumberbatch is beloved by many for his roles as Sherlock, Khan, Christopher Tijens, Alan Turing, Richard III, not to mention the explosive onstage performances in Frankenstein and Hamlet. His face is familiar to most people at this point, and even his seemingly complicated name is becoming a household one. The point here is that Cumberbatch’s career had skyrocketed.
So now, look at this picture. He is a movie star, he is an award winning actor, nominated for everything from an Oscar to Olivier to Emmy. He should be standing front and foremost in the picture, the center of attention, as is his right.
But this is Benedict Cumberbatch, this is the man we love and respect because of things like this-- that he’s standing in the back, allowing his costars to come forward, drawing away the well-deserved attention from himself and onto the others.
