Dipper had lost track of how many coffees he had drunk from the campus cafe in the past couple of days. All he knew for certain was that it had been well over forty-eight hours since he’d last slept, and he suspected that the buzzing he heard in his ear was his heartbeat. But here he was, picking up his upteenth double espresso. This was fine. He had gotten plenty of research finished, he was avoiding nightmares.
Also, he was pretty sure he could see brand new colors now. So that was fun.
He paid for the coffee and took a gulp of it before leaving the cafe, ready to head back to his place and dive back into his reading. Although, he wasn’t exactly paying the closest attention to where he was going, so when he turned a corner and nearly ran headlong into someone coming the other direction, he practically jumped out of skin, yelping and dropping his coffee and letting it spill across the sidewalk.
He leapt back to catch his breath, only after a moment focusing enough to see who he’d run into. “Oh! Oh, Ms. Aster,” he said, feeling himself blanche. “Sorry, I, uh, I didn’t see you.”
