“Wherever I go, the time we shared is over...”
As Matthew took a seat in the sitting room after dinner that evening, he desperately wondered what Mary had meant. Hacksby wasn’t so far, why was she hedging him? And why did she still insist she had to marry that despicable man?
His mother wanted Matthew to fight for her, but what good would it do? Mary had made her decision, hadn’t she? And hadn't he?
The others sipped their drinks and talked as they milled about the room, but Matthew didn’t take part, his eyes fixed blankly on the wall in front of him as though it held all the answers to his problems. But only one thing could relieve the disquiet of his mind. Only Mary could. And she and Carlisle hadn’t entered yet.
He frowned, taking a sip of the brandy Carson placed beside him without tasting it, the vague burning sensation failing to excite his senses.
"Everything all right, Matthew?" Isobel asked, noticing his silence after nearly quarter of an hour had passed.
Matthew nodded without offering any other explanation, too agitated by his own musings to grant a sociable response.
He’d told her the two of them knew where they stood with one another, but the more he thought about it, the less certain he was of himself. Knowing about Mary’s encounter with Pamuk had not diminished his admiration for her, had only increased it, but still he could not let go of the uneasy feeling brought on by Lavinia’s last words. The same words he had shot at Mary in a moment of weakness and pain, irretrievable in spite of his wishes.
But Mary.
She was so resolute, he envied her ability to stand when there was no reason she should. She was stronger than he was, he knew it, they both did. And such a woman, such a storm-braver, deserved so much better from him.
Matthew exhaled slowly. His breath shook as it escaped between his lips, realization flooding through him while at the same time Carlisle’s shouting echoed from the library. Mary’s response forced Matthew to his feet and in an instant he was out the door before the others had noticed the disruption, careening into the library without a second thought.
