There was a used bookstore in Sector Three that Edward popped into sometimes. He suspected that it was a front for one criminal gang or another, but the shelves were usually full, and he’d snagged a couple of worthwhile books through there.

 It wasn’t always safe to go there, especially not at night- but on this particular evening, there he was, browsing the shelves. Somehow, he’d wound up in the romance section, and was going through the old Harlequin romances. 

Bella and Alice both liked these. He remembered a conversation they’d gotten into about books. Well... it hadn’t quite been a conversation. Alice had enthused, Edward had made noncommittal noises, and Bella had made withering remarks about how much more she preferred the Brontes. 

He missed them so much that it hurt- and now, he felt like a lion with a thorn in its paw. Almost without thinking, he pushed the shelf over. It toppled like a domino tower, and books scattered everywhere. 

Edward panted a little with the sheer force of frustration and exertion- and then saw, out of the corner of his eye, someone staring at him. He blinked, and turned, pasting on a false smile.

“Sorry about that.”

it’s probably one of the baseline ones from the omni-tool,, but like. the funky one. and he always laughs at it when it starts techno-pulsing on his wrist. he’s... he’s like a nerdy dad and i’m sad for him.

✄: is my muse creative?

for kaidan it really depends on the topic. like. he’s not bad at creatively coming up with a battle tactic or plan, and he can play the piano. but he’s terrible at art; his school notebooks are full of failed little drawings. he can doodle, kinda, but anything beyond tiny grumpy krogan and he’s lost.

kaidan’s got some really good memories. some of his happiest ones were with his crew and shepard, especially. but excluding the ones he made with his lover and his friends, picking out a more solitary memory for him... i think one of his happiest memories was finally coming home after he’d decided to join the Alliance. the night before he left to get shipped out he and his dad sat out together on the porch of their vancouver vineyard and just watched the sun setting. it’s a memory kaidan wanted to replicate one day with his future spouse; just him and them, a lager in hand, feeling the breeze curl across their cheeks and smell the freshness of opportunity and a new adventure on the air. scary, but thrilling, and that’s where kaidan’s happiest.

☢: something my muse is afraid of

he’s scared of losing the people he cares about. even more terrified of being the reason they’re lost to him. he just. cares so much about his friends and his bf and even fellow crewmates and he carries their lives - and all the lives he’s had to watch fade away because of him - on his shoulders.

♚ Do you agree with fandom interpretation of your character?

Some things, yes. I like how fandom has treated him most of the time. But there seems to be a general consensus that Kaidan is either A) whiny or B) boring. I think he’s neither; rather, Kaidan shows signs of being a little uncomfortable opening up to people about his own problems, and consistently stops himself when he realizes he’s beginning to do so, stopping unless prompted. Never once do we hear him use his past as an excuse to be cruel to anyone, or complain about how his (incredibly painful) migraines are bothering him (he mentions it, but Kaidan states these kind of things as facts and then immediately tells you it won’t be a problem). Kaidan also isn’t a boring character, if you actually try to get to know him. It’s just that since he’s a character that doesn’t need you to ‘fix him’ and can take care of himself / is a generally stable, softspoken kind of guy, people take ‘self-certain’ and turn it into ‘boring’, which is sad. Honestly, Kaidan is the one of the very few Bioware LIs that seems to be there when the protagonist needs him, and not the other way around. Kaidan doesn’t need anything from Shepard (apart from a friendship / relationship kind of ‘need’), unlike a lot of the other characters, and it’s sad that people write that off as him being uninteresting. /end rant

♧ Any part of their canon portrayal you dislike?                

Not… really? The only issue I’ve ever really had with Kaidan is the fact that his bisexuality was erased in the first game, but that was the writers’ fault, not his, and Bioware did a pretty decent job of trying to fix their mistake in the third game. Otherwise, nah, I think his arc is a really nice, interesting one.

Marlton is a firm believer in the idea that anything can seem supernatural if science isn't advanced enough to explain it. Anything that would generally be explained by magic is simply a challenge for future researchers, and he'd argue for days if someone tried to tell him that something couldn't eventually be explained.

amethyst: what my muse would most like to be able to shape-shift into

He’d love to be any creature that could explore the depths of the ocean. If he had to pick something specific, he’d probably go for something weird, like a giant squid.

calcite:my muse's social tendencies (introverted vs extroverted, parties vs one-on-one conversations, etc.)

He enjoys social interaction a whole lot, but he's definitely an introvert. Lively discourse and even a good argument now and again are great fun for him, but he needs alone time to feel really rested, and to take a break from the fear of contamination that follows him everywhere. As far as social gatherings go, he doesn't mind large events, but he's only interested in the kinds of parties where music is quiet and people don't shout, mostly as a matter of preference.

hiddenite:how much of an "inner child" my muse has

This depends on what kinds of childish aspects you're looking at. Marlton definitely needs a lot of attention and is prone to being socially immature, but he's not exactly innocent. Still, he has the kind of general curiosity about the world that's usually associated with kids, so he's definitely got an inner child somewhere.

About no older than 7, Jane quietly looks up at the hooded figure but there isn’t fear in her eyes, just mildly curiosity. 

“Can you see? Are you hot?” Jane wants to ask more questions but something about manners nudges her thoughts and she stops, lowering her gaze and tries to be polite. Her wavy hair is tied up, making the tiny Shepard even less intimidating than she usually is. “Abuela says I shouldn’t talk to strangers...sorry.”

6. If you were to pick one song – and only one song – to describe your character, what would it be and why?

Oh, lord, there’s so many. If there was just one, I’d have to say No Sunlight by Death Cab for Cutie?

The song has a very upbeat tone to it, but the lyrics are more about the slow change in perspective from an optimistic point of view to a pessimistic one. And a good amount of John’s development in Citta has definitely paralleled this; his attitude in his actual run of Mass Effect was a lot more upbeat and optimistic, and even throughout most of Mass Effect 3, he’s fairly optimistic about his chances but about halfway through the game (and leading up to his current state in Citta) his optimism kind of... dies? But, of course, he still plays the part of Commander Shepard for the sake of those around him.

It’s a song about the death of optimism hidden behind an upbeat melody and happy tone, and it’s a bit self explanatory as to why I chose this song for John.

11. What do they think of creation? Do they believe in evolution or do they believe in God? What is their religion like?

John has never cared much for religion, to be honest? On Earth he would occasionally go to church (a Roman Catholic church) but he doesn’t really identify with a single religion. By the time he is at where he’s at, it’s pretty much impossible not to believe in evolution, to be honest? It’s pretty much set in stone in his time.

Honestly I’d say part of him wants to wish that Cerberus never brought him back?

If not that he’d definitely wish for just. A chance to rest.

30 Uncommon Character Development Questions

14. Are they a team player or do they prefer to be solo?

Clint plays both teams - he has no preference. The Avengers gig is basically one big team play and hes sometimes sort of good at following orders. He loves being a part of the team. Solo operations come and go, and they're handled much in the same way only Barton might be a little bit more reckless if theres no one there to watch him.

17. Is your character an introvert or an extrovert? How do they handle big crowds of people?

Clint's an extrovert - he joined a circus as a kid and learned to be a bit of an entertainer. He can work a crowd so hes pretty comfortable dealing with them.

27. If your character had one thing to say to their parents before they died, what would it be?
