Mateo had been cooking dinner, which wasn't something he had done in quite some time. Let alone, he hadn't done it for another person. When it came to his son, he'd do anything but dating had not really been on his radar in many years. However, he wanted to show Mari that she actually meant something to him. That she wasn't just a matter of convenience because they worked in the same bar together. When he heard the door of a vehicle shut in his driveway, he turned off the stove top and walked to the front door to greet her. When he opened up the door, a smile grew against his lips. "Evenin', Mari."

Minding his own business was something that Mateo was good at, at least when it came to personal information and gossip that coasted around town like it kept it alive. However, when it came to minding his own business in helping someone with something, he had never been good at that. Mateo noticed them well before he was noticed by the other person. Walking over, Mateo took a beat, assessing what was going on. "Excuse me," he called out, "need a hand with that?" He always noticed when someone bit off more than they could chew and while he could have gone and helped without asking, he decided to ask this time around. "Happy to lend a hand if you need."

Spending time with his son was a dream. He never thought he'd be a dad, let alone one where people thought he was a good dad. His son was days away from turning two years old and Mateo couldn't believe how much he had grown. Mateo Jr's speaking abilities had vastly changed and the young boy could run around, kick a ball and even had mastered some staircases. He was watching him, arms crossed loosely over his chest when Mateo Jr took off from the play place over to a young man with a stroller. "Baby! Baby!" Mateo Jr called out, waving his hands excitedly. Mateo let out a quiet curse, taking off in a light jog over to the stroller. "Sorry," he gave him a faint smile, "he just got a younger sister and is obsessed with anyone in a stroller."

Mateo likely looked like he had not slept in a few days. He was exhausted from a few sleepless nights with his son, but was trying to power through with a cup of black coffee. It was the strongest brew on the menu and the bitter taste was nothing compare to the lack of sleep. He had been sitting alone, at least for a while until a familiar face showed up. Sitting across from Dakota, he drummed his fingers against the table a moment before parting his lips to ask the man a question. "At what point do you stop feeling like you're 'bout to screw the whole thing up?"

Spotting Mari hadn't been difficult. Not for him. He'd seen her, standing by the bar when he walked in. His gaze naturally searched for her in any room that he was in. They'd been sleeping together for the last few months and his feelings had grown for her in ways that Mateo hated to admit. The last time he had been in love with someone, he left them in the hospital while they were in pain. Mateo was desperately afraid that he was still that person and he hoped that he wasn't. Keeping his eyes locked on Mari, he crossed the room, feeling a pull to be closer to her. When he reached her, his hand rested against her waist, leaning in so that he could whisper in her ear. "I can't wait to see that dress on my floor."

When Teo wasn't with Nel or Mateo, they had been introducing him to daycare. It wasn't many days a week, but it was something that they'd been doing more often since he had turned one years old. Mateo had just dropped his son off and was watching the caretaker carry him back. A smile rested on his lips, one that few people saw. He waved to Teo until he was out of sight and his hand fell back to his side. Mateo turned and began to walk toward the door to leave. As he did so, he turned, seeing someone else walking behind him. He leaned against the door, holding it open for the other. "That ever get easier?" He half questioned, referring to drop off.

When Nel asked him to pick her up from therapy, he didn't say no. He already had Teo and was planning on dropping their son off later in the evening anyway, so it had worked into his plans for the evening. His truck was in park, engine running as he watched Teo from the rearview mirror. The one year old was playing quietly, making small coos with the toy that hung from the car seat. His gaze had also been flickering to the door, waiting for Nel to come out. After a few minutes, the door opened and he saw her walking toward his truck. His finger pressed the unlock button and he waited for her to get in. "Hey," he greeted, "Teo's still awake, don't worry." At least their son's bedtime would still be intact.

Weeks had gone by since he had last seen Mari. Mateo had been avoiding her and she had been signing up for shifts that were opposite his. They didn't even pass each other as shift changes occurred. He'd leave early, show up late, any reason to not run into her. The memory of him taking her on the bar counter top was seared into his mind, burning every time his gaze landed on the spot. He'd even gone as far as doing more side work, helping people out around town and letting the bar run itself.

However, one of the morning shift bartenders texted him as they were leaving that one of the kegs had blown. Mateo had shown up and he didn't see Mari, but hadn't checked the schedule. Without thinking much about it, he got to work. His back was to the rest of the space behind the bar, small headphone buds in his ears as he worked on the keg that had been giving them trouble for a few weeks now anyway. Mateo had been known to get lost in his work, the music coursing through his veins as he worked.
