Cluefinders Theory: Who’s the REAL Monster?
Hey everyone! So I rediscovered the Cluefinders recently, and I think I’ve figured out what Mathra’s REAL story is!
Context:
The Cluefinders is a series of educational games made by The Learning Company between 1998 and 2001. 3rd Grade Adventures: The Mystery of Mathra was the first game in the series, and one I played a long-ass time ago.
Mathra is the titular main antagonist, a dragon (though never referred to as such) who emerged in a South American kingdom named Numeria somewhere in the late 10th century. An apex predator, he fed on any animal he pleased, and did significant damage to Numeria’s capital city. Fearing further loss of life, the Numerians, master inventors who seemed to dabble in magic, placed an invisible net over a chasm Mathra frequently flew over. Mathra got tangled in the net and imprisoned at the bottom of the chasm, but the Numerians didn’t kill him. Instead, they abandoned their capital city, locked it up, then broke the only key to the gate in half and hid the halves in two distant locations, one half in the center of a volcano and the other at the top of a marsh.
In 1998 Mathra seemingly returns, but it turns out that the dragon is, in fact, a disguised airplane. Furrier Fletcher Q. Limburger was exploiting the legend to capture animals for his company, and he is defeated in the same fashion as the original. But then THIS happens...
Mathra is real!
But I don’t think that’s the entire story. Mathra, judging by his name, is quite intelligent. So why’s he the only dragon we see? What’s up with his face? And are there any parallels with the Mayans?
Let’s start out with what kind of animal Mathra is. Quadrupedal, forelimbs free to be modified into wings, four toes, large beak, wide face. Has Earth had animals like that?
We do! Leptoceratopsids match every descriptor.
So here’s my theory on Mathra’s true story:
Following the K-T extinction, a group of leptoceratopsids manage to survive by reducing how much time they spend incubating their eggs. Their descendants evolve into megafauna, with one branch developing powered flight and flammable saliva.
Once North and South America are joined, these creatures flee to the Amazon Rainforest, where they survive for millions of years.
Around one million years ago, one species of particularly long-lived and sauropod-sized flyers becomes sentient. They call themselves the Firelighters, and develop a civilization. However, due to their large size and lack of hands, tool use remains elusive.
The Firelighters, however, can use magic, and use it to develop all sorts of things (such as creating the Egyptian Gods, who appear in the next game in the series, the underground plant people, and basically they’re the reason why several things randomly become sentient).
Humans evolve around 280,000 years ago. Two thousand years ago, the Numerians arrive in the Amazon and set up their kingdom. They have an obsession with the number five, and have five levels of importance for their gods. These levels are color-coded; in increasing order of reverence they are purple, green, red, blue, and gold.
However, in true human fashion, the Numerians proceed to trash the place. A large piece of the forest is destroyed to make room for their farms and buildings, displacing several animals. Next, they proceed to hunt the various draconian creatures to extinction, decimating the Firelighters as their main food sources are now gone.
The Numerians also hunt the Firelighters, only this time to sacrifice their brains to their chief god. Only one, a very young Mathra, escapes the Numerians’ wrath.
Angry and starving, Mathra attacks Numeria, raiding crops and livestock just so he can just get by. The Numerians eventually capture him and plan to kill him.
However, one little orphan girl realizes that her people unjustly killed his family, and says so to the king. The king, realizing that she is right, orders that Mathra instead be imprisoned to protect him from other humans. He then removes his people from the city and outlaws sacrifices.
One thousand years later, Mathra is very old and very, very bitter. The Cluefinders eventually learn his side of the story, and he later dies of old age. With his death, Earth loses an important piece of its history.
With as much emphasis on conservation this series has, it would’ve been cool to see that Mathra wasn’t the actual monster, but the monster of the story was humanity all along.
