The shrine’s sacred spring water, used and revered by brewers for generations, has been a source of inspiration and prosperity for these artisans.
Hōrai Garden (蓬莱の庭) (Kamakura era style), constructed in the Kaiyū style (回遊), which you can enjoy by walking around the garden, is used here, and there are islands in the pond. The islands in the pond are an imitation of an ancient Chinese concept of paradise, with the fountain of eternal youth gushing forth. It is said that this garden expresses Hōrai’s ideas, which include a longing for a world where people will not grow old and die.
Kyokusui Garden (曲水の庭) was constructed in the Heian era style. The Heian era, when Matsunoo Grand Shrine was most prosperous, is the theme of this garden. Rocks and azaleas are entwined with a many-curving stream, curving seven times, and there are many glaucous (light blue and green) rocks on the hill. The design is simple, but its colour scheme is unique.
