Remember this? I’m writing about it.
Matt knit.
Apparently he learned it after the accident, as part of his therapy. It seemed like magic to Steve, how Matt could use touch alone to make such intricate pieces. All attempts to learn have failed, leaving Steve content to just watch.
He was knitting when Steve came back from Bulgaria, weary after two weeks trying to flush out an entrenched HYDRA cell. He wanted the peace of Matt's little apartment, with the clack of wooden needles and softly playing jazz.
Steve kissed Matt's cheek in greeting before dropping off his stuff in the bedroom. He settled down next to him on the couch, content to enjoy the quiet.
Matt's colors ran basic, almost utilitarian – grayscale, black, white, deep reds and blues. Not hard to coordinate, for obvious reasons. This project was a spring green, thick and soft. It seemed to be the beginning of a sweater, but tiny.
"Is someone having a baby?" he asked, seeming like the only reason for a project like this.
"Yes," Matt replied. His hands were slowing.
"Who?" Steve needled with a smile. Matt stopped completely, sweater settling down on to his lap.
"We are."
Steve's brain ground to a halt. His mouth opened and closed uselessly.
"What?" he choked. "How?"
"They should check to see if your sperm is also hyped up on that serum," Matt said dryly. "Since they thwarted both the pill and condoms."
Matt bit his lip, face cast downward. Steve's thoughts were racing, but he noticed how Matt's hands were clenching and unclenching the sweater, and put his arm around Matt's shoulders.
"I'm not angry," he assured. "Just kind of...not expecting this."
"Now we are," Matt mumbled, and leaned against Steve. "I don't...I know we weren't that serious, or anything..."
"Hey, I'm not going to up and leave," Steve promised. "This baby's half yours and half mine. You're stuck with me now."
Matt snorted, but smiled. "Such a terrible position to be in. I don't know how I'll survive with Captain America waiting on me hand and foot."
Steve laughed, and settled his hand on Matt's stomach. Matt's came to cover it.
