Mawal Sidi
My grandpa was never taught to read or write but somehow his words out-shined the words of the best writers and philosophers. He'd wake up at 6 am and go down to his olive, plum, and pear trees down the hill. Alone the way he'd sing " Ya mejana" or Ya thareefatool.. his poetry was so nice.
The last time I got to see him- a year before he passed away at 107 Mashallah- my Mother and I would sit with him and listen to him recite his poetry and music and write them down. He always sang from the heart.
One of my biggest dreams was to have him recite a Mawal (an introductory sung poem) for me on my wedding or sahra. Inshallah i sing one for my children.
