Song Review: Jeff Beck - “You Know What I Mean” (Live, May 2, 1975)

Jeff Beck doesn’t even look like he’s trying.

But he sure sounds like it.

Appearing on the May 2, 1975, broadcast of “The Midnight Special” and playing the riffs to “You Know What I Mean” at about twice the speed of the album version, Beck is expressionless save for lifting the right side of mouth on occasion.

With keyboardist Billy Preston and Max Middleton, drummer Ollie Brown, percussionist Buddy Miles and bassist Willie Weeks in the pocket with him, Beck nails every note, adds a few on the fly and demonstrates that while speed usually kills, it occasionally thrills.

It’s tough to beat the studio version of this Blow by Blow instrumental. But this recently unearthed clip from the vault presents it in a thrilling, unexpected and funkier light.
