Are you ready for what the world is about to throw your way unexpectedly? Whether it’s war, economic trouble, unpredictable weather, a change in donor behavior, a bad day in the social media spotlight, or any of a variety of other things, it’s always a good idea to be prepared in advance. Have a response plan and the resources set aside to deal with what’s lurking on the horizon. It doesn’t matter what the crisis might be.

Carol Quijandria, Los Angeles, learned an important lesson in organizational survival while hitting the ground running. She brings this experience from the corporate world. Carol uses it to ensure that our real assets, our non-profit organizations, have the same staying power as for-profit corporations.

She reminisces over her first experience hitting a major crisis head-on:

The industry suddenly went from green pastures to sailing a ship in a hurricane. Carol’s quick thinking, determination, planning, and organizing abilities managed to pull them through.

What it takes

The Harvard Business Review lists the top behaviors that help with leading organizations when in crisis. They place defining priorities in the number one spot:

“Define priorities. Identify and communicate the three to five most important ones. Early in the crisis, those might include employee safety and care, financial liquidity, customer care, and operational continuity. Document the issues identified, ensure that leadership is fully aligned with them, and make course corrections as events unfold.”

Also on the list are making smart trade-offs of priorities, deciding who your decision-makers will be ahead of time, and embracing action.

While not technically on the list, they also point out one other very key aspect. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and do not punish those in your organization for making them. Mistakes happen – especially in a crisis. Just keep pushing forward. Don’t get distracted and caught up in the little stuff. Your organization’s survival is more important than anything else.
