In keeping with my writing (or not writing) tradition for May:
May 1st
Daily word count: 0
Visit to the doctor’s office: 1
So this five day headache, has been brought to me by tension. Apparently, having 3 part time jobs makes me a wee bit tense.
I got some new meds to try out, so hopefully that’s going to neutralize this tension and pain. Also gentle stretches and whatnot.
No writing tonight just chilling. Oh and for better or worse, I don’t have any work scheduled till the 14th? Because my main client is out of commission for the next two weeks. There might be some on the fly work but at least I’ll have time to stop being so, eh, tense.
Good news, the drugs are working, while the headache is lingering, it’s lost its edge. I’m relieved and pleased about that and hope it vanishes soon.
I played my first D&D one shot game, it was good fun. Nerdy ramblings on D&D below the line.
Now that my headache is getting manageable, I’m looking forward to good writing session in tomorrow. I’m going to keep my word count goal at a low achievable number, 300 (or more).
Baby’s First D&D!
Our little band of adventures managed to solve a crime, your basic robber baron stealing psychedelic berries from a tiny village. He was in league with an evil religious group that were puritanical and hired a band of nefarious rouges (not Rouges as in class but as in villains). One of which turned out to be an evil sorceress back from the dead, and the Big Bad.
I was Reku Taaqtumi, a Ranger-Hunter: Shifter. He can’t actually shift, just has some lupine tendencies. He has a giant weasel companion, named Tasche. Very simple weapons, just a bow, arrows, and short sword. I based a lot of my character on the Landsknechte, because that’s one of the few martial early modern mercenaries I’m familiar with, and I didn’t want to go FULL fantasy, which in retrospect, is silly. I did my best often drifting mumbly German accent.
Highlights:
My friend Stephanie was a half-elf Druid who lived in a swamp, she had the best name! Dagmar the Oozing.
@flippyspoon was a gnome bard named Blighty Bragglybums (another zinger of a name!), who sounded very Irish. He was very nervous at times, and would make up songs while under duress. He played a lute and carried a sword named Bono, which is a wink at Frodo’s sword Sting - a rather layered joke that I won’t expand on. Their character was a delight.
My friend Armando was an Orc Paladin named Grim Strongjaw (he sounded delightfully like a Scottish thug in a Guy Ritchie film). He got to summon a magic horse. He stood up from the table and proudly announced, that his glittering pink pony had arrived! What was its name? Chapplle Roan, of course.
I was the first one to roll a nat-20!
I got a free roll for using my impromptu skills in a clever way, which felt like getting a good grade in pretending, and I was chuffed.
Our DM had adventure music cued up on his phone, which I was not expecting! He changed it according to the mood of the location.
We all lived!
Honestly there were a lot of funny moments, loads of laughter, and it was so lovely to be focused on the game and thinking about pretend horrors and instead of real ones.
I was definitely running out of steam towards the end of the game, it was a rough week! HOWEVER- I’m so happy I got to play.
I did visit a client at the hospital and attend a friend’s party… then went for a late night drive for a doughnut - which I don’t usually crave - but I wanted one. It’s so late it’s early so sleepy time for me.
I’m starting to wonder if I should shift from writing by hand to strictly typing. Obviously that would be faster, but not as portable. I have all day off tomorrow - I’m hoping after a good nights sleep if I can challenge myself to a looong day of multiple writing sessions? I think it will feel good. We shall see!
It’s been a long moody day and I’m happy to be home in my own bed after 4 days and three nights of house and pet sitting. Time to rest and let the story percolate.
Juniper (left) and Pocket (right) my wards for the long weekend. Of course I’m very happy to be home with my baby Valentine, pictured below in all her ominous glory. 💜
Still hosting, tomorrow the auntie will be delivered to the train station. You know what? My auntie spends more time on her phone, than I do on mine. Mostly doing picture puzzles and watching videos on Instagram. I don’t approve. But who’s going to tell her? Certainly not me.
Maybe tomorrow night I’ll have the magical combination of time, energy and motivation to write?
