It was February. It was a fairly mild February, and Maya Vie had many February's to compare it to. The first few she didn't remember, of course. The first one she remembered was in first grade. 1973. She remembered the snow glittering in the sunlight. 1982 was the last time she had seen it. She hasn't known at the time. She hasn't known she would get sick. She hadnt known that she would be lying there in the hospital with Disney characters painted on the wall, crying only after her dad left because how could she put him through this? After this very same thing, this Leukemia had claimed her mother, and now it was slowly dragging her from the land of the living. She would have done anything to keep her dad's heart from breaking again. And she had. She had given her life for it.
"Don't freak out."
Being approached by a stranger in an alleyway was enough to frighten anyone, but she had been waiting for this one. He smelled like blood, fresh blood, but messy, and his heart wasn't beating.
"I could hear you from a bit away. You seem very young. Are you alright? Did you just get turned and dropped or do you have the one who turned you somewhere?" Wherever his sire was, they were clearly not doing a very good job of raising the man in his new life. He couldn't have been turned more than a week ago. He still smelled of human and panic.
"I'm not going to hurt you."
