art / work is a location-specific sound installation whose subject is artists as workers. Benjamin McCarthy merges documentary and formal experimentation with sound and technology, to produce a composition the sole source material of which is his recorded conversations with artists from Toronto’s broader arts scene. Beyond experimenting with sound, dialogical improvisation, the human voice, and discarded and repurposed technology, it’s also an exploration of the ability of simple self-narrativization and self-sharing to create vivid pictures of real people in an attempt to foster community-engagement and empathy.
It is installed at the United Steel Workers Hall at 25 Cecil street in Toronto, Ontario from May 1-15.
