my mom had zero idea who CK was before his death and vehemently hates DT, but she also has been known to fall for propaganda and is easily bamboozled. i have a lot of religious trauma from her joining a cult when i was a teen - not the point of this, but just to give context this woman is a known fool. she's had to cancel credit cards and open a new bank account 3 times this year alone because she's so easily scammed despite telling her not to give personal info over the phone or click on any links.
so take that foolery and then add in the constant ads and pro-conservative posts on facebook. my mom still hates DT, but despite my telling her how horrible a person CK was she's watched so many vids that edited him in a way that made him seem like just a family man/christian guy that she's falling for the propaganda. i've read to her actual heinous quotes he's said about women and minorities and she's said things like 'oh that's horrible. well i've done my own research and i haven't seen anything like that at all, is that something i could google' and her research/googling is literally just looking up edited clips of him on facebook conveniently leaving out his opinions on women/poc/guns/etc.
not sure if this could be what happened with your grandma? you have my sympathies.
I think what I find very difficult to grapple with- and maybe you do too- is that she wasn't like this the majority of my life. MB personal life under the cut.
My grandparents were very good people who were considered pretty liberal for the time period they grew up in. When I was a kid, my grandmother encouraged me to ignore boys/men, focus on my education, and was always bragging about how smart and capable I was. She was always encouraging me to pursue academic pursuits and was one of many women from her generation that urged me not to rely wholly on a man. She talked about women she'd known who had no education, no job, no money that were abandoned by husbands and was always really up front that even marriage wouldn't protect you if he chose to leave you.
I took all that to heart. I'll never forget having to tell my grandmother I was pregnant and just the disappointment she felt about the whole thing because she thought I was ruining my own life before I had a chance to be stable. How proud she was when I ended up getting my masters degree and my own career so I wouldn't be reliant on Mr. MB. She helped me with my retirement and savings- like that was ALL HER.
And when my grandpa got really sick, they lost a lot of their community. When we'd come down to visit, Fox News was ALWAYS on, even in the background and my once very decent grandfather became paranoid and had this like...I don't know how to explain it. Like he'd become angry and aggrieved over things that had never bothered him before- but even then my grandmother was the voice of reason.
Then he died, and she got cancer, and I just wonder if she became very isolated. She lives states away, she lost her church community, her ladies group- like when my grandfather passed away she moved out of Little Rock back down to San Antonio and her support group just vanished and I feel like since that happened, she too has become angrier, more paranoid, and more concerned about things that she never cared about before. Five years ago, she wanted to know about the girls' education and now she talks about their religious instruction, how the schools we have them in are indoctrinating them, and have I ever considered homeschooling them.
It's hard not to feel bitter and angry about it all- I feel like they were stolen from me, that the people who raised me to have the values I have, to be the person I am, are hollowed out. She comes from an era where you could trust the media around you and didn't necessarily need to fact check everything and I don't know- I wonder like, does she genuinely believe these things? Is she really this angry?
And it's like...she wants to go on a family vacation and I want that, too, because I know I probably don't have another decade with her and she's my last living grandmother. But I've got two daughters- my oldest is WHOLLY focused on her academics to the point she's taking advanced, high school math classes and planning extra-cirriculars around the high school she wants to go to because she wants to get into a good college because she wants to be a doctor.
My son just came out as gay.
Do I want someone whose views have shifted so radically around my kids? Is she even SAFE to be around my children? It just feels deeply unfair. I always thought I was so lucky to grow up with the family I had, who encouraged me to be independent and intelligent and it's hard to watch this slow decline and celebration of Christian Nationalism right before she leaves us forever.
calling mat after tonight’s game and being so so so proud of him but then seeing his face and how he’s been all beat up and being like poor baby you don’t deserve this :(
“Mat you should wear a cage to protect that face, it attracts pucks and sticks like it attracts girls.”
He thinks you’re joking but you actually aren’t and he says something along the lines of “it’ll be worth it if you kiss it better for me🥺”
You can hear the rest of the teams fake gag in the back and someone says “I’ll kiss it better Barzy”
“Y/n you’ve got some competition, ebs is making a move on your man”
“Nah there’s no competition... Gary is gonna win” - Mat
