Marlene couldn’t believe how obnoxious that Sirius Black guy was. Him and his little gang used to be the noisiest and most irritating students in her Potions class. However, no matter how fastidious he was, there was always something about him that was distracting and she cursed the moment in which she started paying attention to him. It all started on the day professor Slughorn decided to pair up odd couples of students to prepare the felix felicis potion. Unluckily, she had to work with him as her best friend, Dorcas, was paired up with James Potter.
“So, McKinnon, you have all the luck. You got a handsome but also, excellent partner in crime for this.” Sirius asked with a mischievous grin. He was a charmer at best, but she knew better than surrender to his antics.
“You mean the potions book, right? Because I really doubt you’re handsome enough to distract me for a longer time than a book.” But little old Marlene knew little about Black’s competitiveness and at the sound of these words, that hidden switch on him went on and there was no way of stopping it.
“Try me! I bet that you will be REALLY close to me sooner than you think.” He defied. Marlene rolled her eyes, did she really have to put up with him for the rest of the class?
“Making silence would suffice for a while.” She stated as she intended to pay attention to the professor. In the meantime, Sirius stared at the girl standing in front of him. Not that he didn’t notice her features before, after all, he was a fan of beauty, but he had never been so close to Marlene McKinnon ever before and he could tell that there was something alluring about that “sass”. He wasn’t even paying attention, probably he was too distracted by staring at the way her hair fell on her shoulders when he poured the wrong liquid into the cauldron, causing an immediate explosion that blew him a few feet away and luckily didn’t reach her.
“What on earth!” Marlene ran towards him as the rest of students started talking and laughing. Professor Slughorn got to the place and lifted the unconscious boy from the floor, carrying him towards the Hospital Wing. Marlene felt a little bit responsible, she left the ingredients there, carelessly without considering that Sirius Black was as distracted as a little boy in a candy shop. So, after the class was dismissed, she walked towards the hospital, without being quite sure of what she was doing. She knew little about him, but she could tell he was a nice guy, in spite of having an ego of the size of Saturn.
As she entered the place she saw him lying on the bed, his eyes closed as he hummed a song she didn’t know. “That wasn’t very smart of you, Black.” Her voice was soft and still, a little bit scolding, what was he thinking about when he did that? They learnt the do’s and don’ts on their first year. Sirius opened hi eyes, his face lighting up a bit at the sight of an angel of light… sort of. He didn’t count on her visit, usually nobody went, unless it was Moony, Wormtail or Prongs.
“It wasn’t smart, but it was fun.” He shrugged.
“You call fun being blown by an explosion?”
“Yes I do… what’s life without a little risk?” She looked liked the kind of girl determined to play it safe, and still there was something weirds screaming wildness from her. It was so strange. Marlene shook her head, laughing for the first time. Little did he know that some years later, they would go head over heels for each other.

After
“Can you stay silent?” The nurse asked hastily. Sirius stood by the bed where Marlene was sleeping. None of them saw this coming, if they did, for sure he would’ve done anything to stop her from going back to her home, to a trap. The last three years Sirius Black and Marlene McKinnon had been escaping from Lord Voldemort’s death eaters. Having multiple identities, trying to help all the people they could along the way, coping with each other’s nightmares… It had been too exhausting. There had to be a day when they had to stop. And they did, but because they wanted, it was because they were forced to.
Sirius wished he was the one lying in that bed and not her. He felt guilty about it, after all, he got Marlene involved on his cause and the feeling wouldn’t go away, no matter how many times she said that she believe in it as well. He didn’t want that for her. And now, there they were, together on a hospital room, where everything started once. He had that day so fresh in his memory, he would never let go of that precious moments. If it hadn’t been for that explosion he wouldn’t have met her, determined her.
And now they were there, switching roles but this time there was nothing to laugh about. He kept on humming his favourite song, over and over, in spite of the recommendations of the nurses of keeping silence. How could they ask for that? When you’re ill and unable to respond you don’t want to feel lonely. Sirius didn’t want to leave her on her own. Sitting by her side, holding her had, just like she did that day he wasn’t as injured as her he started singing softly.
Her hand moved slightly, holding on to his weakly. Sirius opened his eyes, immediately getting teary. “Marls…” he whispered as she let out a long sigh before reacting and daring to look at him. It had felt like a lifetime being asleep, she was lost, but it was comforting to feel and see him by her side at that moment, she knew she was safe. His voice brought her back. In fact, she heard everything, from far, far away. It had been some awful reverie, Marlene had nightmares of even worse tortures than she endured and for just that moment, living and being awake was ten thousand times better than any other thing in life.
“You don’t shut up, don’t you.” She said with a raspy voice, attempting to smile.
“I’m not a man of miracles… You’re here.” He said, leaning forward and kissing her forehead. Sirius would never risk losing her again. Ever. “Why did you go there, I told you not to.” It wasn’t a time for scolding but he couldn’t help himself, the simple idea of a life without McKinnon seemed impossible. Marlene shook her head, refusing to go back to the past, explaining herself of give him any reason, she did what she should and that was it. So, evading the topic, she immediately recalled the day everything started.
