The Brothers Size scene breakdown
prologue space/dream space/flashback
This is a liminal space that is not wholly removed from the rest of the story. It sets the tempo for the entire show and creates a primal, eternal sensibility that tugs at the seams of reality. It may seem outlandish at first, but its poetry is heard in the language. Its lighting should be seen – if not felt – in the coming scenes.
The morning calls for either harsh sunlight or a warmer, murkier haze.
Scene 2 shop with Elegba, midday
Lunchtime may be the sticky heat of summer and a high noon sun. If it is hot enough, the sun may cause shimmering mirages. Elegba is also an intrusive presence into the brothers’ lives, and his lighting could use something off-kilter or even sinister.
Scene 3 shop with brothers, afternoon on the same day
They discuss Ogun’s lost love. There is closeness and tension between them.
Scene 4 home, dinner that night
It is “unusually quiet.” The brothers complain and quarrel over dinner.
Scene 5 night, Oshoosi dreaming
This scene should reflect the Prologue. It is a “sad” dream with a “sweet” song.
Oshoosi wakes from a nightmare. The entire scene is his narration of waking.
Scene 7 shop, perhaps mid-morning
This scene may be touched by the nightmare that came before.
Scene 1 a week later, Ogun dreaming
The dream is strange and ominous. It and its lighting may foreshadow trouble to come.
Scene 2 home, morning after the dream
This time, it is Ogun who wakes in fear.
Scene 3 home, the next morning
The anger is palpable. The retelling of action is critical.
Scene 5 home, later the same night
The brothers have an argument.
This morning is a harsh, unsettled morning.
