Annabelle woke up in Drew’s huge bed, alone. She expected Drew to be there but he was nowhere to be seen. She groaned, reluctantly headed to the bathroom and washed her face. Once she entered the living room filled with the smell of breakfast, her eyes widened.
“Good morning Anna,” Drew first greeted her from where he was, on the couch in between his twin brother Declan and his younger brother, Jake.
The oldest of the Syversons, Connor and the 5th oldest Allen were sitting on the kitchen stool, currently working on Allen’s 9th-grade math.
Annabelle sat near the couch uncomfortably, unsure of what to do. “I didn’t know you had this many brothers.” She said. Connor chuckled and nodded, “You are missing 4 more of us.”
She seemed surprised, “You mean you have 8 siblings!?” Annabelle blurt out. Jake smirked, “And 2 more coming up in a few months!” Annabelle paused, wondering what their parents look like.
They should be pretty old then. The idea of their father being a former special force commander came to her mind.
No wonder why they could financially raise 9 kids.
They noticed the footsteps coming closer from the corridor. The boys sitting on the couch all smiled and moved from the couch and sat on the ground.
“She’s up,” Drew said. Annabelle then saw a tall, broad-shouldered man with a beard carrying a tiny, obviously younger woman in his arms in a bridal style.
“Good morning dad!” The twins and Jake cheerfully said. Sy smiled, “Good morning fellas.” He quietly replied. He walked toward Connor and Allan in the kitchen, still tightly holding Aura.
“Good morning dad, good morning Aura,” Connor said and gently caressed Aura’s right cheek. Sy greeted back then headed to the couch and gently placed the woman there, covering her in a fluffy blanket.
Aura slightly whined and tried to snuggle back into his arms. “Shh sweetheart, I’ll be right back, just go back to sleep yeah?” Sy softly said. When he went to the kitchen and opened the fridge, he grabbed already cut fruits and yogurt, and a bowl from the shelf.
“You didn’t tell me you had a sister, either!” Annabelle pointed her finger to Aura who is peacefully sleeping, exclaimed to the brothers who were now sitting near the couch looking at the sleeping figure.
“No, we don’t have a sister. She is our mom, …Anna, was it? Could you turn down your voice a little bit, Anna?” Jake quietly said to her.
“Sorry,” Annabelle said and raised her eyebrow.
Sy put the bowl with only a little amount of food for one adult with a spoon on the table, and slowly kneeled down in front of the couch. “Good morning sweetheart.” He softly whispered and nuzzled his face into Aura’s neck.
Aura whined, slightly annoyed by Sy, and tried to snuggle more into the soft couch. Sy chuckled and said, “I know doll, but the breakfast is ready.” He sat on the sofa and put her up in his lap, squeezing her abdomen gently.
Aura snuggled her face into his neck and said, “I don’t wanna,” Connor chuckled and shook his head slightly, left the kitchen counter and sat by the sofa. Sy glanced at Connor and allowed him to sit next to him.
What is going on? This weirdly skinny woman is acting like a 4-year-old girl. And she is their mom? What’s her problem? Annabelle frowned and wailed inside.
Aura reluctantly sat straight in Sy’s lap and made grabby hands. Connor reached for the bowl and handed it to her, and she started eating slowly.
There was a unique yet peaceful silence particular to Sunday mornings in Siverson’s family. Sy caressed Aura’s hair and kissed her head soundly, “That’s my good girl.” He said.
Unable to tolerate the awkwardness she felt any longer, Annabelle suddenly stood up from where she sat and headed to Drew’s bedroom. Drew reluctantly followed the apparently upset girl to the bedroom.
“What’s up with you?” Drew crossed his arms and asked.
“What’s up with me!? Nothing is wrong with me, it’s your goddamn mother! What’s wrong with her?” She threw her arms and exclaimed.
“Don’t you dare talk about our mom like that” He slightly raised his voice. Annabelle froze at the spot, unable to process the situation anymore. She grabbed her shirt from the night before from the floor and put it in the bag, and hurriedly left the room.
When she met the other boys in the living room, she heard a voice from the kitchen, “Hi Anna! Do you want some tea? We also have cookies if you are still hungry!” Aura cheerfully talked to the girl who is now glaring at her and leaving the house.
Once he heard the door closed, Drew came back from his bedroom, a frown on his face.
“…hey, at least they lasted 2 months this time!” Jake jokingly told the other boys. “Connor’s last girlfriend ghosted after.. what, a month and a half?”
They all laughed, “Just shut up, Jake!” Connor groaned. “I mean if they don’t accept who she is, then there is no way they get along with the rest of us.”
He quietly stated from where he sat, staring longingly at the woman who is now happily humming in the kitchen completely unaware of what is going on in the living room.
“William! Can we bake today, please? I wanna try the new recipe I found yesterday!” Sy softly smiled and held her in his arm from behind.
