In 1898, the first Post Office opened in the tiny Texas town called Strawberry.  About a year later, the townspeople renamed the community “Arp” after William Arp, the newspaper editor.    The town grew to become home to about a thousand residents.

In 1931, the first successful oil well was drilled in Arp; and soon the McMurry Refining Company opened up there.   What you see in these photos are the remains of that refinery.  Before long, the local population peaked at about 2,500. 

On Wednesday, November 8, 1933, the refinery’s payroll office was robbed by a couple of notorious bandits named Bonnie and Clyde.     They made the refinery employees pry the safe out of the cement floor when they claimed that Mr. McMurry, who wasn’t there, had the only key.  

There were two fires at the refinery, one in the 1930′s and a second one around 1950.   After the second fire, the refinery was abandoned and never reopened.   

The present owners of the property have been working hard cleaning up the site.  Contrary to other reports we’ve seen online, the building at the front corner of the property is not abandoned.   It’s a very nice, well stocked, popular package store; and the folks there are fun to visit with.

Guess who's a college student now!

I am feeling pretty ready for college now! I have received my graduation robes(resisted the urge to go run down the school hallways wearing them-I was tempted). I have gone to prom, which is supposedly the highlight of high school. It was, by the way. And now, I have been accepted to a college! I'm going to one of the smaller, private 4 universities in my hometown (there is 4 colleges in town-3 private, 4 year universities & a 2 year junior college). From that university, I have received a Presidential scholarship for $12,000 per year/$6,000 per semester. It will continue all 4 years of college, so a total of $48,000! I haven't even received my FAFSA package from the college yet! I'm touring the college later this month. I'm pretty excited now! And, a huge thanks to my World, Art, & European History teacher who encouraged me to apply-even when I resisted her because of the price tag of the school. She actually cried when I told her I was accepted this morning. When I told her, & she drug me up to tell my 2 other teachers, all of them hugged me. They were so excited for me. My mom is so happy for me. I feel so lucky to have so many supportive people in my life. I don't think I would have applied if she hadn't practically beat me on the head. I didn't think my SAT/ACT scores were good either...until I saw that they were good enough. Screw you ACT, I am qualified for college! So, I'm ready to face the world now, I guess. I'm an adult soon! Graduation is in a few short weeks! After AP testing!
