Is Tumblr a Blog or a Social Media Site?

Hooray! The day has come and I don't know where to start lol.

Before today, I have always wanted to write a blog! I was thinking blogs are cool for those who loves to write and I am one of those who loves writing. I usually write in my diary and keep it as private as possible. Wait.. Is this actually a blog? Because I am writing on a Tumblr...

People are questioning,

"Is Tumblr a Blog or a Social Media Site?".

Now that's interesting!

I believe, the term of "blog" has been heard by most people in the world, but what is blog really?

According to Cambridge English Dictionary, "Blog is a regular record of your thoughts, opinions, or experiences that you put on the internet for other people to read." On the other hand, "Social Networking Site is a website that is designed to help people communicate and share information, photographs, etc." Both have a quite similar meaning because both are social platforms that allow people to share and get information.

What about Tumblr?

Personally, I don't really use Tumblr because my friends are not on it. As I installed it now, I find out that Tumblr is a very interesting platform because there are so many things I can find and of course, blogs too. I have used Instagram all my life and it's not as interesting as Tumblr can be. Why? In this case, Tumblr is giving access to people to read our blogs that we write at the same time allowing people to like, comment, follow, and etc too. It's like the updated version of Wordpress and Blogger.

Let's see through the other social media, Instagram for instance, it's only for pictures and pictures only. People barely read on Instagram. Because Instagram is known for sharing pictures and moments. Facebook is another, it's all about videos and old friends. People barely used Instagram nor Facebook to write a blog. Because it wasn't the intention of the creator in the first place.

But on Tumblr, you can find people with intention is for writing and sharing things only and using it as a platform to stay connected with friends and other people that have same interest with them.

So, what left to say?

Tumblr is both blog and social media site.

WHAT IS TUMBLR?

IS IT A BLOG OR A SOCIAL NETWORK SITE? 🤔

Firstly, what is a blog? A blog or in another term is a “web log” is a form of website where users use it for commentaries, reports on events, or others like posting of photographs and videos. Well, bloggers depict a blog as “an automated weblog publishing tool”. It has the power of an instant communication to allow the bloggers to express and post their thoughts like in diaries or journals when they feel like it. The blog can be personal, creative, educational, or professional depending on what the blogger wants their blog to be (Boyd 2006).

And, what is a social network site? A social network site is an instrument that enable communication, interchange subject and cooperate in numerous methods. People across the world uses it in their everyday social activity to connect with other people be it near or far. The social network site is a trend amongst the young adults according to the research. The use of social media to maintain the conventional offline networks and has become a norm in the community and the usage of it only increases over the years (Sharma & Godiyal 2016, p. 157).

So, what about Tumblr? Tumblr is both a blogging platform and a social network site, which it is also refers as a platform of short-form microblogging. This network has millions of users, using the platform to write entries, post photographs, video clips and such that and share it with their friends and/or followers (Boone 2019). As a platform in an advancing community, Tumblr offers a place or space to discuss issues associated to personality, body image and sexuality freely. The laidback content balance of Tumblr has its good side and bad side for the users. The good side is that it discussed content like explicit sexuality for healthy sex practices, sexual discovery prospects and ingenuousness of taboo dialogs, for instance, sex work. However, the bad side of its relaxed content is that the disturbing content specifically child pornography and Nazi activism. Thus, the reason for the new policy of Tumblr which bans not safe for work (NSFW) content in order to create a “better, more positive Tumblr” 👍 for the community (Sands 2018). 

Tumblr is both a blog and social network site depending on the user on how they want to use it. It is a platform to share the users’ stories, moments or such with their friends and/or followers.

Is Tumblr a blog or a social network site?

Introduction to Tumblr

Tumblr was founded in 2007 by David Karp and Marco Arment. Based on the report in 2019, 172 billion of the post had been published on Tumblr. Basically, Tumblr can described as a micro-blogging site which is a mix like twitter, Facebook and WordPress because the user can use Tumblr to post or upload the video, text, image and others which allow user to create their own post. Users can subscribe other user’s pages which the user’s feed will show out on the dashboard (Boone 2012).

 What is blog?

Blog is the journal or daily which located online on the website. Normally, the content of the blog consists video, text, images and others. Blog can be personal use but also can share the information that user wishes to share to others as a public. The blog owner has their right to set their blog become private or public access.

What is Social Networking Site?

The Social Networking Site is an online platform which provide the service to the user that allow the users to create profile and interact with the other users. SNS have many different rules for establishing the connection. There have some Social Networking Site which are LinkedIn, Facebook and others.  So, is Tumblr a blog or social network site?

Tumblr is a social network site because it allows the Tumblr’s members follow each other and share the post, and comment others post. But Tumble also a free blogging platform which aim to post and share anything that member want to share as easy as possible. (Boone 2012).

 Tumblr called as a social network site because it has the function that like the Facebook (news feed). As we can see, Tumblr users connect with each other by subscribing to another Tumblr blog. When the user updates their blog with the pic or others, all these updates will show at the Dashboard. A social network is a place to publish content and comment on other people’s content.

 Tumblr called as a blogging platform because it allows the users to create the blog include the text, pic and others. Therefore, Tumblr provide the service which allow the user to create the multimedia post type that photo, feature text and others. Basically, Tumblr is more for creating bit-sized piece of content rather than long-form content (Stringfellow, 2013)

 Tumblr is a blogging platform and social network. The user can use it as blogging or social networking because the Tumblr provide both in their platform. The power of this platform is the user can use it as blogging and social networking.
