How OTT Video downloads impact on data transfer
OTT Video sharing is one form of the Over-the-Top content sharing system which aids in the delivery of music, video and other forms of video across the internet. It is known as OTT because it involves 'riding' on the back of internet provision, and therefore does not need any further software or data transfer products. Unlike other forms of data sharing, OTT does not require multiple-system operators, and this means that there is a capacity to share data more quickly. However, as the initiating provider of the content cannot change the data or halt the process, this can mean that there are some problems in sharing.
OTT video sharing is the data transfer method of choice for most on-demand channels which go through the internet in order to provide access to the required systems. OTT content is usually delivered from a third party, which may include companies such as Netflix, NetD, Crackle and NowTV. These channels are becoming increasingly popular, and so there is an increased pressure on the channels to deliver goods, quickly and over a wide area. This can cause some strain on ISP servers, but most specialists believe that OTT services are likely to play a significant part in the next stage of both Internet television and Pay TV channels such as that operated by Kindle.
OTT video services are also being used by businesses in the form of IP packets, also known as VOIP. This is video-conferencing for the 21st century, and allows workers to communicate together across the internet. In these situations, VOIP is paid for on a monthly basis, and not per call, which means that calls are usually unlimited. This puts some pressure on the internet providers, who are having to distribute VOIP data along with their standard internet and broadband packages.
OTT is considered to cause some harm to traditional network and communication providers. It is estimated that the telecoms giants will lose close to $500 billion from their annual profits to VOIP providers alone, and this is expected to increase once more people invest in OTT video technology. Businesses who require regular and affordable communication systems are also likely to invest in VOIP and OTT video technology in the near future. This could result in the collapse of some large telecom businesses as they are no longer able to compete with OTT. Some of these telecom giants have already given up the battle, and have decided to concentrate their profits in 4G development, ensuring connectivity for customers who wish to make use of OTT video in the future. However, others have invested in alternatives to OTT systems, which may take off, or could see their owners move into the red.
