I've been writing usually-explicit m/m romantic fanfiction since at least the mid-2000s (the internet is NOT forever, actually). Over the years, I've had many beta readers, but none of them have been dudes. There are a few reasons for this, mostly that there haven't been very many (if any) around and I have not felt the need to find one. It's fanfiction. It doesn't get a professional line-edit, either.
But now I'm on the final editing stages of my first book (which is also m/m explicit romance), and I've decided to hire a queer-dude sensitivity reader. Honestly, it's because I'm dead curious! Will he have sex notes? Or try to tell me I shouldn't make lesbian jokes? (Spoiler: I should.) I do have a non-binary secondary (but v important) character, which I'm a little less sure about than lesbian jokes (obvs), so we'll see what happens there.
This is such an adventure, y'all. But it's been literally ten years since I started writing the thing, so I'm dead determined to get it out there this god damn year.
GO TEAM
I'm finally tackling the point I've been avoiding in revising book 1 -
Editor: Um this is too vague, what does it actually involve?
Me: okay but what would you say if I told you I haven't the foggiest
😭
I know WHY it happened and why it MATTERS in the story, but sometimes that's not enough.
Anybody wanna workshop this with me? Will exchange for services in kind. Or cheerleading. Or a ficlet of your choice. Or whatever.
My writing notes -- things I remember while I'm working on something else, mostly -- say brilliant things like 'but now I want to add in a leg cramp' and 'fix the racist soup' and 'HELLO IRENE'S DIRT COLLECTION' so I don't understand how I'm not yet a national treasure tbh
