A short Megstiel drabble I did because I was bored. Cas finds out about Meg's death. Got the idea from the promo pics for 9.09 of Team Free Will sitting together at a table. (x)

Castiel's forehead creased and his head tilted. Whatever it was, Dean sounded pretty serious. "What? Is something wrong?"

"Listen, we didn't tell you earlier because of everything that was going on. But now we can't avoid it any longer." Dean sighed, taking a sip of his drink.

"Tell me Dean, what is it?" The former angel looked to Sam for an explanation but the younger Winchester just gave him a pitiful look.

The brothers exchanged a look before Dean cleared his throat. "Remember that time we went to get the angel tablet, and Meg came with us?"

"I already apologized-"

Sam interrupted him. "We know you're sorry, we don't want you to apologize."

"Then what?" Castiel asked.

"Soon after you...left," Sam told him. "Crowley found Meg and I. She told me to leave her behind and go on to save you and Dean while she held him off."

Castiel's body froze, expecting the worst. "And?"

"Well, she-she didn't make it out." Sam finished.

Castiel didn't say anything.

"Crowley killed her with an angel blade. We wanted to save her, we really did. We're so sorry." Dean said.

Castiel didn't hear him. His shock had gotten to him, he blocked everything out and thought of Meg: her lips, her hands, her attitude, her tenderness. Everything about her. Everything he loved. And she was gone.

If only he had been there, he could've saved her...

Castiel stood up abruptly from the table. Dean and Sam looked up. Was that really Dean and Sam, the blurry figures he barely recognized through his haze of shock?

"Where are you going, Cas?" Dean's rough voice sounded as if he were speaking from a much further distance than the table. 

"I'm taking a walk." He replied, walking away from the table and in the direction of the exit.

"But it's raining, you'll get cold." Sam told him. Cas ignored him and went outside.

He stepped into the rain. The cold air was harsh, like little knives travelling in the wind, poking at his exposed skin. It brought him back to Earth. 

Cas looked around. This was a big city, people were milling about in large crowds on the sidewalks. He kept seeing Meg's face in the corner of his vision, but when he turned it would just be another stranger passing by. He turned his head back and forth repeatedly until he couldn't handle it any more and he slunk onto the ground, leaning against the building for support, only one thought in his mind:

Meg was gone.
