It was cold, damp and quiet. Too quiet. Alex had just woken up, and couldn't remember anything. She could feel blood covering her body as she lay stiff and motionless on the ground. Her head felt like someone had dropped an anvil on it. “Alex!” That voice… “Alex please wake up!” The panic that filled his trembling voice. “Please….” His voice cracked as a heavy sob trembled from his lips.
“N….Na….Nate?” Alex slowly opened her eyes, revealing the breathtaking boy.
“Alex! Oh my god! I…I thought you were dead….” Nate looked, breathing heavily, at the girl he had known his whole life.
“ngg…. What….what happened?” Alex said, finally able to see. What she saw, was so familiar to her, yet, still so breathtaking. She saw his eyes; Nate’s eyes; her favorite pair of eye to look into.
“We need to get out of here.” Nate’s voice trembled with unspoken fear, as he slowly slid his arms under Alex. He tried to lift her off the debris stricken ground, but this only cause a pained wail to erupt from her. Fear filled Nate’s eyes as he let out another choked sob. “Oh god. I’m so sorry.” His voice broke again as he whispered. He could tell that Alex easily had some broken ribs, along with, the way her ankle was twisted the wrong way, a broken ankle too. This made it difficult to move her. Nate tried to console Alex, as his breaths came out heavy and ragged. “Okay….on three.” He looked into her eyes, and see that she is horrified beyond words. She nodded shakily.
“…okay…” Alex winced as Nate managed to lift her off the cold ground. He gently shifted Alex in his shaking grip, so that her head was now resting on his shoulder. He took a small step forward, trying to keep the hurt girl still. Nate could feel tears soaking into his shirt the more he moved. “Nate…I’m scared..” These words almost broke the Green eyed boy. Fresh tears streamed down his face as he tried to quicken his steps.
“Me too, Alex, but I swear, I will always protect you.” Alex looked up at him, her big blue eyes, red and streaked. They moved in silence, as Nate navigated through the rubble of their school. The two remembered running down the halls together after their latest track meet, or when they ran to their classes after waking up late. They where snapped out of their nostalgia, by a loud, fast paced beeping.
“N-Nate, what’s that!?” Alex’s voice was shaky and riddled with fear.
“it…..-” suddenly the beeping stopped… “Alex!” Nate yelled her name, but its was barley audible over the loud explosion. There had been a second bomb.
