The Hanged Man
Melkor and Varda
So usually I post Angbang stuff and so on
But I thought, that today might be a good day to talk about Melkor and Varda, because I think their relationship is a rather interesting one and doesn’t get as much recognition as it deserves.
The first thing about Melkor and Varda, that comes to mind is, that they are complete opposites.
Varda is the lady of light, she is fair and beautiful, calm and wise
Melkor is the lord of chaos and darknes, he is terrifying, full of hatred and rash
The normal way of looking at Varda and Melkor is the way of regarding them as enemies, even Antagonists to one another. Varda is the one the elves hold in highest regards, while they fear Melkor more than anything. So it does make sense, to think of Varda and Melkor as bitter enemies.
Yet there is a small part in the Silmarilion, that implies a different point of view. That is the part, where Melkor is described.
“In the beginning he desired the light...” And so on and so forth.
It is made clear, that Melkor wanted Varda for himself. (In the beginnign of all days)
And as he realised, that he couldn’t get her (since she was probably already in love with Manwe) He turned away from the light, and fell into the darknes.
Bearing this in mind it isn’t all that crazy to conclude, that Melkor once loved Varda or at least had some feelings for her.
It is a shame, that we don’t know more about the first days and how things were before the Ainulindale. Maybe Varda and Melkor were friends, maybe they were a couple. But at some pint, Varda must’ve turned away from Melkor and to Manwe.
This would also furthermore explain Melkors hatred torwards his brother. In his mindset Manwe ist guilty for stealing Varda from him. (But that is only headcanon)
I personally assume, that Melkor was deeply hurt by Vardas desicion. She choose Manwe instead of him.
Theoretically his personal pain could’ve transfered onto his creations and that is why the dark creatures of the world, fear the light.
Also Varda is one of the few beings, Melkor seems to fear, which also would be explained with his feelings for her.
What could be more frighting, than the imagination of hurting the person you once loved and (supposedly) still love.
Since we know practically nothing about either Varda or Melkor, before the Ainulindale, we only can rely on theories regarding their relationship.
I personally like the image of Melkor and Varda as a couple, but some day, Varda meets Melkors younger brother Manwe and she realises, that there is evil within Melkor. So she turns away from him, dooming him to fall.
And so he starts to hate her and to fear her at the same time.
In conclusion: Melkor and Varda might be enemies, but once they may have been lovers, which would explain their dire antagony. In any case theri relationship is very interesting, even more if you think, that irt shifted so drastically. Its too bad, that so few people talk about it.
What do you think about Varda and Melkor?
