announcing the mello velo cycling club: it is alive
A few weeks ago, some friendly bike hooligans managed to gather over ziti and pizza to discuss the rebirth of the Mello Velo Cycling Club. As it is currently imagined, the club will be a banner under which all sorts of racing and non-racing cycling activities can be organized, supported, and promoted. I for one am super-excited to see how this enterprise turns out!
The meeting quickly and anarchically splintered into sub-committees, out of which a bunch of stuff precipitated. Here's a sample of news that seems ready to announce:
Mello Morning Miles: Randy Hadzor's Mello Morning Miles fast-ish road rides are continuing this year. Departs from the shop dark & early on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, 5 am and 7 am unless otherwise specified. Randy has been announcing each ride on facebook by tagging individual people and using the hashtag #mellomorningmiles.
Mello(wer) Sunday Afternoon Miles: Has your bike been left to its own devices this winter (or longer)? Left alone, bikes develop bad habits like being heavier than you remember and much harder to operate. Now that spring is here, it's time to get out there and start training our bikes to be those freedom-giving friends we remember! Pilar & Jes have been organizing a shorter, more mellow, super-inclusive group training ride on Sunday afternoons. This week's ride leaves from Jamesville Beach Park at 3 pm on Sunday April 27. The meeting location has been changing each week, so stay tuned to the ride calendar or get in touch via facebook. You can also call/sms Pilar at 315-[five three three two six eight four].
Gravel road rides: they're happening! My good friend Brian Hidy is organizing the second annual West-of-I81 Skaneateles-area Gravel Hunt Metric Century (my unofficial name for it) on May 17th. More info on the facebook event page. I did it last year and it was a hoot!
Additionally, I will be organizing the inaugural East-of-I81 Tour of the State Forests Gravel Hunt Metric Century (my official name for it) tentatively scheduled for June 22nd, tentatively meeting and departing from Fabius, NY. Email me if you'd like to help or have ideas for the route! In keeping with Brian's vision for these types of rides, there will be no fee, no drop but expect no material support, no liability, and are shop-agnostic. Invite everyone [who will enjoy a hilly ~60 mile mixed terrain ride]! Gravel is about making friends :-)
It's gonna be a fun summer! And there's lots more in the works. We'll likely have another meeting soon announced here, on the mello velo blog and/or on the mello velo facebook page, but in the mean time, check out our nifty gügle ride calendar!
