Prototypes in JavaScript are a way for implementing inheritance, and inheritance is a pattern for code reuse. One of the effects of code reuse is a lower memory footprint, but using prototypes for reducing the memory footprint doesn't guarantee that the code is reusable. Opting for the prototypal pattern for the sake of memory footprint is a premature optimisation.

Indeed, attaching the methods of an object to its prototype prevents these methods from using the variables declared in the scope of the closure created by the object. Example of the prototypal pattern:

The rule of thumbs is to always use prototype for single inheritance, not for reducing the memory footprint. At the end of the project, if the memory footprint is too high and needs to be reduced, and there are no other gains than this one (such as optimising images, removing zombie views, fixing memory leaks) and the gain has been evaluated via profiling tools, then it's wise to move some methods to the prototype.
