Headcannon: Where a gem is at on the mohs scale relates to how much damage their physical body can take before they have to retreat into their gem to heal. The higher the rating the more damage they can take.
Oh geeze, I remember learning about the Mohs scale way back in like...4th grade! That’d be kind of neat.
Here’s one that includes some gemstone hardness (since is a scale of mineral hardness, which doesn't always take into account gemstones since their mineral components can vary vastly)
Theory: Before Rose tamed him, Lion was basically a gem killer from some enemy planet. Genetically engineered by the dominant species there to kill a certain type of gem and was very good at it. Rose defeated him and spared his life, so he became her partner. The same has happened to few other gems, most of the ones confronted by gem killing animals die. But those that do not die can either tame or kill the animal sent after them.
So something similar to the monster bird the Gems faced with Opal?
