i’ve been having thoughts about sunoo. specifically the implications that he’s plotting against the other six boys through constant themes in their mvs.
starting with blessed-cursed, the song is pretty clear with its meaning: enhypen has realized they’re trapped in a lie, and decide to break free. this very obviously correlates to the orphanage they’ve run away from after discovering their vampiric powers.
while each of the members talk consistently of being tamed by the orphanage and the false normalcy it provided, sunoo sings a different tune.
he talks of a lie, but doesn’t specify exactly how he was lied to. the others are clear: a blue pill, sweet lips, hiding reality. but sunoo is much vaguer.
“that lie that broke my wings,” he says.
the imagery of wings was first brought up by jake, who doesn’t mention them in his lines, but the wings are clearly displayed behind him.
what makes this image of the wings stand out so starkly against sunoo’s is that his wings are very much present, he just chooses not to wear them. he steps away and chooses to defy the role he’s been given.
but where did sunoo’s wings go? they were stolen, but when?
bring your attention to sacrifice (eat me up).
here, we see sunoo with the wings of an angel. he’s in heaven, or a place filled with light. a shrine sits above him, but he sings of a night approaching. something that suffocates him. what could this be?
the other six boys.
seen here, they drag sunoo to the shrine. he sings that he struggles, but he is too drained to fight. it’s unclear why exactly it’s sunoo being sacrificed. all we know is that sunoo’s wings have been taken by his brothers; the ones he trusts most.
the light atmosphere betrays this idea. how does sacrificing one’s brother create a heavenly atmosphere? well, this is the lie they speak of in blessed-cursed. the lie that pierces through the light, and that reality must fade into.
we see the reality of this in future perfect (pass the mic)’s japanese mv.
now, sunoo was absent for this music video due to health reasons, but it’s easy to infer the role he would have played. the members surround a masked figure who lays dormant on the ground of a shrine. a shrine that looks strikingly similar to the one seen in sacrifice. this masked figure is sunoo, betrayed by those he once called his brothers.
unlike in sacrifice, sunoo is lifeless; sacrificed fully. there is no resistance and no struggle for him to sing about. he’s gone. he’s dead. this is the reality enhypen tries to hide.
now, do you remember jake? the one who chose to discard his wings while sunoo was left to die after having them torn from his body?
let’s return to sacrifice (eat me up).
he drags the torn wings up the shrine. presumably, these are the same wings torn from sunoo’s back.
“let me live in you forever.” he sings to the brother he sacrificed. he desires sunoo’s life.
and as they travel forward into blessed-cursed in the year 2000, now embodying new lives and a new purpose in their lover, they’ve forgotten about the sacrifice they made all those centuries ago. it’s far away from them now.
but sunoo remembers.
and he refuses to be lied to again.
