In AD 33 a Jewish man from a remote village was executed under Roman law. It was widely known that he was no criminal. A sect of Jewish people even regarded him as a prophet. But he had been foolish enough to make powerful enemies among his people and utterly failed to make the political inroads necessary to be a successful influencer. A foolish end for a foolish man.
But even the Roman pagans who were there had a very different story to tell. A story of unwavering strength and faith in the face of agonizing pressure to relent. A story that would outlast the destruction of the temple, the fall of Rome, and the end of the world as we know it. A story in which his enemies, including Satan himself, played the fools, and his power became absolute.
On this Holy Saturday of reflection, I can’t help but be ashamed of my own foolishness for getting caught up in things that don’t matter in life. But in AD 33 Jesus passed the torch to me and every one of his followers to be his living testimony on earth. That leaves me and every other Christian with a powerful challenge to accept.
Are we ready to have unwavering faith despite any agonizing pressure that comes our way? Will we show the world that trusting God is a more powerful act than any set of circumstances that we face? Rather than praying for God to make our lives better or chasing the approval of the world, let us pray each day to have the faith and power of the cross.
