Let's make this a tag challenge. I dare you to show me the "messy middle" of something of yours. It doesn't have to be art. Show me a shot of your fiction rough draft. Show me your cake batter before it's mixed. Show me the pieces of that sewing project before it's fully assembled (or show me your raw seams on the inside). Show me the tangled threads on the back of your latest cross-stitch project. Show me all the clips dumped into the media pool of your video edit.
This is from a Dispatch fanfic where I'm working out one background character's powers. If it makes it to AO3, I think it will look very different.
Home had been damp, wet, green and blue, soft, muted, comforting, sometimes hard, viscous, humid; far, far away. Lana’s fingers worked through the motions to trace the patterns of the words that the humans used for communication. More exactly, that the humans used for communication with her, and others of their kind who lacked the sense that allowed them to make the movements of their mouth into the specific thoughts and ideas they choose to trade into something recognizable by others in some unfathomable way (ugh -fix this). This was an exercise in copying those motions, making them precise and exact, but also in forming the words they used to exemplify their thoughts and ideas. It was an unnatural process, but one she needed to master if she was to engage in nuanced and complicated interactions with them.
What that sense she lacked might feel like, Lana had no perception. That was something she could not imagine. The words that represented things were icons shaped by the movements of hands and she could hold them in her mind by the patterns her fingers traced, but to attempt to feel what sound and hearing might be? Impossible. She wondered if it was the same for humans who somehow found themselves without the ability to hear.
There was a tap on her shoulder. Her. A word she had chosen for them to use in place of her name when talking with others. Such an odd practice. She looked up.
“Hi!” Hartly said, “Want to join me for lunch?”
