Zorktour 2016

Hello! I’m busy planning a poetry tour of the Midwest in mid-August to promote my new book "Ghost in the Club" from Metatron Press. I’m looking for help in finding potential venues. Could be anything: bookstore, bar, café, house party, sidewalk whatever. Here are some cities I’m interested in reading in. This is not a full list, and I’m open to any suggestions. LOOKING GOOD AND HAVING A GOOD TIME by FAWN PARKER

A Q&A CONDUCTED WITH MYSELF AFTER READING

Q: when you turn the lights out but keep your eyes open, what do you look at?

A: at first there is nothing & then i fill in the gaps.  or my brain does.  my brain does a lot of the heavy lifting when my eyes cannot & that is not me bragging. that is why people fall in love with other people.  eyes are not important.  in the dark, in the light, everything looks like love.  this book, a pdf on my laptop, looks like love.  it eases me in to this idea all by itself.  it lets me breathe until it stops hurting to feel so much. she says, “the 4 x 8” loaf pan looked a lot like you,” & this is fiction but it’s not.

 Q: have you ever climbed anything very big?

A: “I call my friend Lorraine and say, I need you, I need you.”  i grew up in the midwest which is supposed to be very flat but we have small mountians here. we have sand dunes too.  there is something very lonely about being at the top of something & i always forget that i am allowed to reach out.  i always forget that i do not have to continue forward & be alone.  sometimes we live in sadness, fawn parker reminds me, she reminds me, but it is not permanent.  it is a cloak we wrap ourselves in because everything is scary.  

 Q: what do you most wish other people would ask you?

A: i do not want to be a mystery.  i want them to ask me anything.

 Q: what does that even mean?

A: it means that i want to keep this on track. it means that i read this collection of short stories & it cracked me open like an egg.  it means i want my answers to myself to be good enough for myself. it means sometimes there are not answers.  it means fawn parker invented a band & had two fake characters interview each other & i thought what if i just took away all that pretense for my review to show that what she is doing is this, but it is more magical.  i hope that answer is acceptable.

 Q: okay, last question: did you cry reading this?

A: of course i did.  everything is a mask for something else until it isn’t.  every story in this book turns me into goo because every story in this book is not the fiction it pretends to be.  a professor asked me the other day what truth was & the thing is truth is when you feel something real.  i am a person who feels.  i am a person who thrives on emotion.  what fawn parker has done is given me a space in which that is allowed.  she has made a weird little true world, which is better than my own, because it is always honest.
