ok. I tried to give it the benefit of the doubt but, I thought “메소드” (Method) was one of the worst queer movies I’ve ever seen. And not because the plot or acting were bad, but because the overall script was just not fleshed out enough. There was so much emotion and dialogue missing. I felt like i was watching a really long trailer, not a BIFF award-nominated film. and it extra sucks because that means it got attention not because it was a well-made queer film, but because it happened to have gay men in it.
The acting was good, but I couldn’t connect with it because the characters were written so 2-dimensionally. I felt like I had to fill in way too many gaps where there should have been dialogue and character interaction to show the development of their relationship.
Also because the two men were both straight before this relationship, their relationship is very much “blamed” on method acting, so their relationship isn’t even seen as valid by the end of the film. The actors did have some chemistry and I think that if it had been framed a little differently, I could have forgiven the fact that I still had to fill in so many gaps. But it just wasn’t entertaining or believable. It just felt weirdly empty.
There was one particularly interesting Korean culture moment in 메소드 though!!! We see Jae-ha and Young-woo’s relationship changes so drastically that Young-woo goes from addressing Jae-ha as 형 (hyung) to 선배 (sunbae) in the span of like a week. ... and omg. It hurt. That was 1 of like 3 scenes that I felt.
I had high hopes for 메소드 because the trailer looked really interesting but it was a major letdown. There were too many details missing for me to enjoy it, and the homosexual relationship became the antagonist by the end of the film. I wouldn’t recommend this movie to anyone. 13 year olds write fanfiction better than the script for this movie.
If anyone else has seen this movie and wants to discuss, drop by my ask :)
