The MTC Oughtamobile

This MTC (Metropolitan Transit Commission, now known as MetroTransit) bus ad was delivered to homes with the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune in October, 1979. The humorous ad encouraged riders to ride the bus before or after rush hour for a little more elbow room, but assured riders that a fleet of new buses would soon be on their way.

The energy crisis of the 1970s and resulting economic downturn caused MTC ridership to increase over 50 percent between 1970 and 1979, and service miles were doubled. Demand for new buses was nationwide. During rush hours (6:30-9:00 a.m. and 3:30-6:00 p.m.) more than 800 buses drove out and about traveling a total of 95,000 miles every day. More and more bus shelters were added and “All you can ride” cards reduced the need for pockets full of quarters. The pocket-sized Twin Cities Transit Guide and convenient telephone information operators made navigating the MTC system a breeze in the pre-smartphone days.
