While the discussions about the 80's introduction discs have similarities to something we have talked around here before, the difference is that we are more focused on one period this time. Specifically, the 80's found many musicians looking for a way to carry on and some got carried away. However, there were a couple like Lou Reed who achieved many surprising results during the era. Speaking of Mr. Reed – I must tell you I like his work from the decade, but you cannot compare the latter to his heights. Still, I would claim Growing Up In Public already set the template for his 80's, so I disagree with an Allmusic review, which considers this a transitional album towards his consequent LPs. I would actually call this his Lodger, if you catch my drift.

Longtime Lou Reed keyboardist Michael Fonfara died in a Toronto hospital on Friday (Jan. 8) at age 74 following a two-year battle with cancer.

Journeyman keyboardist Michael Fonfara, whose credits include Electric Flag, Lou Reed, Foreigner and Canada’s Downchild Blues Band, has died at age 74 from cancer.

“It is with heavy hearts that we sadly announce the passing of our dear friend and long-time bandmate, Michael Fonfara,” Downchild, whom the keyboardist joined in 1990, said on Facebook.

“He was an incredible musician, a gentle soul and we were honored to share the stage with him every time we performed,” the group said. “He will be deeply missed.”

Fonfara played with the Electric Flag and Rhinoceros in the 1960s before partnering with Reed, with whom he co-wrote and -produced 1980’s Growing up in Public after contributing to eight Reed LPs in the ’70s.

In 1981, Fonfara appeared on Foreigner 4.

The keyboardist also produced the Grievous Angles, who called Fonfara a “legend” and “an incredible talent.”

“(He) taught us so much about music and the business,” the band tweeted. “Go to the angels, Michael.”
