Product Hunt Live Founder AMA Recap

Thanks all 65 of you for joining me at the first Product Hunt Live Founder AMA last Friday at the majestic Monkey Inferno (thanks for hosting!).

Shaan Puri gave us the backstory on the Bebo reacquisition and shared the inspiration for Monkey Inferno's new video walkie talkie app, Blab.

Michael Galpert used virtual assistants to "MVP" his initial product which led to the stupid simple calendar scheduling service, Super.cc.

Sandi MacPherson shared her early, "unscalable" tactics growing Quibb (ask her about cranks!).

Jonathan Howard gave us a look into his diverse background from politics to gaming to now healthcare as the co-founder of Emissary.

Zack Shapiro told us about Luna and his ridiculous/awesome idea to own every rooftop in San Francisco.

Sorry to those that couldn't snag a ticket before they sold out but hopefully these pics will alleviate the FOMO ;).

One of my favorite apps that has the coveted homerow placement on my iPhone is Squarespace Note. 

I use the app to quickly send myself notes and reminders to my email inbox.

You can also customize it to post to different services like Twitter, Dropbox, Evernote and others.

So I thought it would be cool to see if I can set it up to send events to my calendar with the help of Super.cc without having to open an email app.

It's still rough around the edges but it works!

The following is a guide to set it up yourself:

Step 0: Download Squarespace Note

Step 1: swipe your thumb to the left.

Step 1a: pull the screen down to edit services

Step 2: tap ADD SERVICE

Step 3: Name of service = Super.cc Destination Email = [email protected]

Step 4: Turn off DEFAULT

Step 5: Tap FROM ADDRESS

Step 5a: Choose UNIQUE

Step 5b: Write down your UNIQUE email address you will need to enter this on your Super.cc profile

Step 6: Go back and choose EMAIL SUBJECT

Step 6a: Choose Excerpt

Step 7: Choose EMAIL BODY

Step7a: Choose NOTE

Head over to your Super.cc account

Step 8: Add your UNIQUE email from Step 5 as an additional email.

From now on you can easily add events to your calendar using Squarespace Note.

Introducing Super.cc

My company built something awesome that enables you to create calendar entries & invites from any email; it’s called Super.cc 

2 years ago, I set out on a mission to figure out how to take care of the mundane things in life, so people would have the ability to be superhuman.

In that time, my team and I ran lots of experiments to see what was the most effective way of accomplishing this at scale.

The first major experiment we ran was to better understand what was distracting people from being superhuman; we offered a virtual assistant service called Superhuman alpha.

Superhuman alpha facilitated the lives of many of my friends and the lives of their friends.

The service provided was loved and appreciated; unfortunately we learned the limitations of scaling a human powered service and decided it was best to discontinue the service.

We then spent our time on a second major experiment which was called SuperCalendar.

This experiment offered a virtual scheduling assistant to manage and coordinate your schedule. We turned it off in the Fall of 2013 because we couldn’t provide a consistent experience due to human error and the intricacies of people’s calendaring habits.

However, during the SuperCalendar experiment we noticed that all of our users would send emails to their scheduling assistants, to have events added to their calendar.

Over the past couple of months we spent our energy building out a product that automated this process and call it Super.cc

As a company we strive to build an experience that just works and plan to offer more automations for daily life; but as Reid Hoffman is attributed as saying:

“If you are not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’ve launched too late.”

Give Praise and Be Proud

In this self-absorbed era of twitter, blogs and instagram, I think its of vital importance to tell people that you care about how much they mean to you. We all play off of each other in one way or another. We share ideas as entrepreneurs. We share our couches, coffee, laptops, office space. We should also share praise.

Nate Westheimer - You rock man. I have known you throughout our start-up careers. Its only been a short time since we have been involved in creating and mentoring, but I am excited to see where this journey takes us. From Bricabox all the way to Picturelife and your investment of time and energy in the NYC community to your eagerness to learn code - it is all hard work and I hope that it is paying off for you and everyone around you. So happy for you.

Kyle Bragger - Dude. Wow, you have been kicking ass with your ideas and code. I wish I could turn my ideas into Sets as well as you do on a daily basis. Having met you through Nate and watching your world expand has been an awesome experience. There is a robust community of coders in NYC and you are at the top of the list. Sets is in its infancy and Forrst has helped to spark work and camaraderie amongst people who design and build complex ideas. It gives designers and developers an essential feedback loop that was once missing. Allowing people to share their ideas is your specialty. Working together is something you breathe. 

Michael Galpert - Hey Man, Well how can I not include MSG in the mix of people who have helped and inspired me over the years? You are always tinkering with what comes next. How can we make this better, where are services needed and how can we connect the dots. I view you as a spirited individual with a burning desire to make things better. You think outside the box. From Aviary to Superhuman you are constructing tools that people need and use on a daily basis. We need better services and will always need a helping hand. Keep it up. I am proud of you.

There are many many more people who I feel deserve praise. I am just recounting my NYC colleagues who I battled with back in the good ole' days of 2007-2009. We were all in our early 20s, figuring everything out. Now we are a little older, maybe wiser and have a few start-ups under our belts. 

Here's to the next 30 years of innovation.
