Charlie's interest in hockey actually came from watching MIchael play.
He used to beg him and Levi to let him play with them even tho he was liddle.
Michael became "the band aid friend" shortly after Charlie learned to skate ( to be fair he was already becoming that because of how often Charlie would just yeet himself at or from playground equipment ( Lorelai Rory and Michael handskahe emoji not knowing peace since that kid learned to crawl jsdfkd)
While telling off Christopher Charlie more or less says Michael's more his dad than Chris ever was "and he's not even That much older than me"
Rory and MIchael both have their own designated days to pick up Charlie from school or pewwee hockey and no matter what's going on between them and/or the Gilmores they don't miss that ther's An Understanding.
