VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE — BLOODLINES 2 "This little chat is courtesy of my selfless desire to entertain the elderly."
One thing I appreciate about Bloodlines 2 is the way it shows how actually holding rank in the Camarilla is a HELL of a lot less glamorous from the inside looking out then it seems from the outside looking in. Most of Phyre's work as Sheriff is bloody, tedious, and involves running around the city chasing vague leads and whispers from the Primogens and other Kindred. Meanwhile Prince Ryong is presiding over a unruly mess of competing interests and factional violence, doing her best to keep the peace without showing any fatal weakness in-spite of the efforts of dozens of Kindred to tear it to shreds.
The Camarilla usually gets depicted as this implacable monolith of elitist power, but Bloodlines 2 depicts them with a lot more nuance: being the ones to keep order and maintain the masquerade sucks actually: it's thankless, bloody, work that will leave you forever alienated on some level from your only peers. It's not a trip of vanity or power (at least not for Phyre, Ryong, Tolly, etc), it's a dirty job that someone has to do to avoid the species getting wiped out.
Tolly and Phyre energy feels like
My Vtmb2 Headcanons (that probably won't turn up in my fic?)
Tolly was a Cleopatra-based embrace and learned tech later to protect himself and make himself useful/fit in with the stereotype for male members of his clan (he was a male model in San Fran in the 80s)
Fabien knows how to make classic cocktails, but you probably shouldn't drink them (the alcohol percentage is equivalent to hand sanitiser, this man was a lush when he was alive and his kidneys/liver hated him)
Hector was a Toreador
Patience claims one of the skulls in their workshop is Banksy. They... might be lying...
Niko loves a good rom com and will manipulate some of his customers into meeting each other if he thinks they'd be a good match. (Also he kills abusive partners)
Safia's workpass has so many keyrings that it could be used to beat jesus.
Ryong is supplying the keyrings from her out-of-city connections trips. Her collection is a well-preserved and cared for selection of Jimmy Choos and Red Bottoms from the 90s until now.
Fletcher is pissed beyond belief that the only person who appreciates the oldies that he plays in his bar is Fabien
Also, if you ask Fletcher to play Piano Man or try to stiff the waiter on their tip, someone will drag you out back and beat you thoroughly
Benny needs Max around to be able to relax enough to go to sleep. It pisses him off.
Mrs Thorn rewatches 80s EastEnders and 90s Coronation Street
i know that the outfits phyre wears could be considered dissident with the context of the game & Who they are. but i like to think that this old as dirt vampire woke up from a hundred year nap, with 1920s fashion context fresh on their mind and said "i absolutely MUST serve, by today's standards" and proceeded to immediately paint their nails, dye their hair, get their face/ears pierced, and coordinate extremely sexy little outfits. i think phyre is actually just as flamboyant as tolly is really. that's why he acknowledges it by saying they're both big fat queers ❤️
I think the incredibly gay Nosferatu who refuses to hide despite his appearance, talks about the social stigma and shame faced by nosferatu like it's a great big queer allegory and told me "you're a bloodsucker honey, nothing more queer than that" is my favorite character from Bloodlines 2 and I wish he was in a better game.
A small post ending comic.
