Chico is finally comfortable enough to approach me during floortime. he generally keeps his distance and only approaches me when i have food, but lately he’s willingly cuddled up against me (+ fallen sleep once!) and it’s honestly the most rewarding thing. eight months of patience and trust training is finally paying off.

today i learned that my guinea pigs have associated the phrase ‘good boy!’ with treats.

i think the piggies have finally, finally, finally reached a stage where they trust me more than they fear me. the boys still have their own quirks that we need to work on, but i’m happy that after almost seven months of being friends, they’ve finally started to see me as more than the person that brings them food.

i used to think that Chico would be better off alone since he’s so moody and territorial, but today during floor/phototime, i realized that i may actually be wrong. i separated them for pictures today and during a photoshoot, Chico heard Miles make some kind of noise from their cage and started wheeking for him. i put him back on the ground (inside the floortime pen) and he kept calling and calling for Miles. he was kind of quiet about it at first, but then got louder and louder when Miles called back. it was kind of endearing, really. i feel bad about stressing Chico out like that, but now i know that he’s actually better with a friend than alone. Miles might not be his ideal match (they have two different personalities; not exactly 100% opposite, but different enough that they clash a lot) but it looks like he harbors some sort of fondness for him, even if it is coming from the most instinctual places.

I let the boys try a bit of grapefruit tonight. Chico doesn’t love or hate it, which i found kind of shocking. I was so sure he was gonna be like ‘nah.’ but he had a genuine interest in both the fruit and the peel (he liked the peel more, though). Miles on the other hand, lol. Miles wouldn’t even taste it. He sniffed it twice, then backed up. Came back for another sniff, then ran to the opposite of the cage and chattered. This is the first thing that I’ve found that Miles doesn’t like. He’s normally such a little...well...piggy. Curious to find out how he feels about regular oranges.

not really sure if anyone actually keeps up with my taming logs, but Miles has made a lot of progress since we started! he’ll sit still for cuddles for about 10 to 15 minutes IF (and only if) you’re standing or sitting, but not in a couch or anything similar. i’ve also noticed that cuddles work better if he’s not WITH Chico, but can see him. so right now, laptime is being done on the floor right in front of the cage. it’s working well so far! i do eventually want to be able to hold Miles and sit on the couch for a while (maybe for the duration of like one episode of some show on Netflix, ideally), but i think we’ve still got a ways to go before that happens. baby steps.

i went to petsmart today to buy a new willow tunnel for the boys’ cage because they are absolutely demolishing one (and only one! not the other) of the ones they have. i bumped into a woman and had a nice chat about guinea pigs (and later, her cat, her dead mom’s cat, her son’s allergies to cats, how much she hates spiders, how much she hates rats, etc), left, got home, and realized i forgot to get the tunnel i went in for. ;c but, what i did get was two new water bottles! i’m being very picky with the appearance of the boys’ cage and want everything to be as color-coordinated as possible since it’s on full display in my living room (as that’s the only place i could fit a 3x4 C&C cage). i found two glass water bottles for 12 dollars a piece. they’re clear with cute little green leaves on them and i’m very happy with my purchase. i also bought the boys some new chew toys. turns out, Miles really likes pinecones. gonna see what i can do about gathering (+ cleaning/disinfecting) some from my friend’s yard.
