Doi Suthep and the Micro Skirts
Short one today. Discovered a new breakfast favourite of banana and Nutella toast in a spot near our place. They also have Schweppes ginger ale and A&W root beer. Definitely a new mainstay, I feel. The main attraction today was heading up the mountain to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. It was absolutely incredible. We all collectively fought throwing up in the songthaew as we twisted and turned up the hill on the way. Nearly killing scooter drivers at every turn. Once we arrived, we saw some truly awe inspiring sights. It started with a spider the size of my hand that scared the living hell out of Maggie's sister. It looked like it lived on small birds. Beyond that, we saw the staircase leading to the temple. Giant dragons built as railings on either side up to the gates. Only a 30 baht ($1.20) cost for foreigners to get in. An absolute steal. The buildings and sculptures are incredible. Gold Buddha's everywhere. Incredible works of Jade as well. Unfortunately, the part that struck me the most was the inability of people to follow the simple fucking rules. Some basics being: - Don't dress like an idiot. Cover your knees, shoulders and stomach - Don't wear shoes in the temple - No PDA's - No photos of monks - Keep your head below the Buddha's and the Monks while in the temple - Keep your voice down - Basically, don't be a god damn jackass There were Korean girls in micro skirts. Guys touching everything that signs told you not to touch. As well as, most heartbreakingly, throwing garbage over every railing. Picturesque views of the hills surrounding us were littered with trash. What the fuck world? It was pretty infuriating and we had to collectively take a breath to avoid killing people. As with every place in Thailand there were cute dogs everywhere which made me feel a bit better. Afterwards, we went to Tops. This is basically the White people T&T. It had many things I'd forgotten existed like Hobknobs. I used to love those things. The food court there was actually awesome. You had to buy little charge cards to take to each vendor which seemed unnecessary but they made a hell of a Korean BBQ pork. After that, exhausted by the horrendous actions of the people around us at the Wat, we headed home to relax before the next outing. Tomorrow, I go in search of a guitar and we check out an Irish pub. Cheers
