Got my QY700 last night... 😁✨
I swear I need to stop acquiring random gear, but today isn't the day I shall do that. For I have yet another silly piece of vintage equipment in my collection! This time a Yamaha QX21 MIDI sequencer. This thing is a pretty early and basic MIDI sequencer from 1985. As in... well, SUPER basic. It only has two tracks and can only record to one of those tracks (you kinda use track 1 as your recording track and then mix stuff down into track 2 to create a song or pattern), plus you can only have one "sequence" per say saved on the unit. If you want to keep your work, you have to either save it as a SYSEX dump via MIDI or save to a cassete via an MSX-style 8-pin DIN-to-audio cable. Sooo yeaaahhh, not that useful in our modern age.
STILL, it's pretty fun to mess with honestly. Quite clunky to say the least, but fun for a silly hipster like me who loves finding obscure and cheap vintage music equipment. And it goes nicely with my vintage Casio CZ-1000 too, as demonstrated here!

Just messing around on the Yamaha QY70 MIDI sequencer from 1997. Audio quality is sketchy because I recorded it on my phone in a small room through a tiny amp. Video quality is jumpy and skippy because apparently my phone is crap. Enjoy!
Okay, maybe this is obvious to everyone and I'm an idiot, or maybe I'm just grasping at straws, but could a screen similar to this be where Autechre got the name for their album Oversteps?
Also I've had a Korg Electribe 2S for ages now but have never really shown it off. Haven't used it much except for recently when I started learning how to use it as a hardware MIDI sequencer. Something it's actually pretty fucking good at.
So what does a husky like me do? Pair it up with my recently acquired Casio CZ-1000 and experiment of course!
Sooo seeing as I simultaneously discovered not only the existence of the Roland PMA-5 recently but ALSO that a local Music Go Round had one in their store, I decided to pick it up and give it a go! Spoilers: it’s actually really neat and kinda weirdly anachronistic for its time.
