Irish Village, Dubai to showcase Midge Ure on 24 September
On 24 September, Midge Ure, the famous British musician, will perform at the Irish Village, where he will perform alongside live band as his first music concert at the venue. Ure rose to fame because of his popular tracks such as 'Vienna', 'If I Was', 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes'. His best known work to date is as the lead vocalist of the British new wave band Ultravox, with whom he scored songs that topped most charts in the UK.
In 1984, Ure, with his long-time collaborator Bob Geldof, founded the British charity supergroup 'Band Aid', and the first track they produced together was called 'Do They Know It's Christmas?'. This was to raise money for anti-poverty efforts in Ethiopia during that time. Thirty years later, in 2014, Band Aid was reincarnated as 'Band Aid 30' to create awareness and prevent the spread of the Ebola virus in the Western African regions. This time around, the line-up of British artists included contemporary hit-makers such as Chris Martin of Coldplay, Bono of U2, Ed Sheeran, One Direction, Sam Smith, Emeli Sandé, Ellie Goulding, Rita Ora, Bastille and others. These current chart-topping artists lent sang for the collaborative effort.
The Irish Village, which has previously hosted Geldof will now play host to Ure, when he performs on 24 September. Previous performers at The Irish Village include rock music artists such as Boyzone, Macy Gray, Slash, UB40, Boy George, Sinead O'Connor and also contemporary artists such as The Wailers, Deacon Blue, Paolo Nutini and the Irish Midlands Youth Orchestra. Along with Dubai, Ure is also scheduled to perform in Denmark, Mexico, Italy and at different places in the England.
In 2005, Ure, with Geldof, produced the Live 8 concerts, with the aim of encouraging G8 leaders to take action to end world poverty. Same year, Ure became an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and was recognised for his services to charity and music. Over the next few years, Ure won five honorary degrees. Ure was awarded for his charity and artistic work in 2005, by the University of Abertay Dundee; and then again he was given the honorary degree of Doctor of Music by the University of Edinburgh. Then, Ure was given his third honorary doctorate by the University of Paisley in 2007 towards his contribution to the Scottish culture and charity work. For his humanitarian and musical achievements, the Glasgow Caledonian University awarded Ure with his fourth honorary doctorate. The University of Bath also awarded Ure an honorary Doctor of Laws in December 2010.
Ure recently visited Ethiopia and Sierra Leone, and is an ambassador for Save the Children.
