MIHAWK
Marriage was something that had never been mentioned before between you and Mihawk. Not that it hadn’t played on both of your minds at some points but you were both comfortable with how things were and were steadfastly committed to each other without the need of some ceremony. Besides now that he was part of Cross Guild, he shuddered to think what kind of spectacle such an affair would become when the clown caught wind of a wedding. He liked his privacy and always intended his personal life to be kept just that, personal. Which meant no one pried into his life, no one knew a thing about your connection to Mihawk. For the longest time that had worked to both your and his benefit but as you’d soon find out, when the whole world didn’t know you were spoken for and to who, it could go against you too.
Mihawk first grew suspicious when you hadn’t called on time, in all your years together he could count on one hand the amount of times either of you missed or were late to call the other. All of those times were it had happened, the call was made less than twenty minutes later and the lateness explained down to external circumstances or annoyances. So when there was still no answer when he tried to reach you and you hadn’t made any attempt to call him by the hour mark, he was already shouldering Yoru and striding out of Cross Guild’s base all while ignoring any calls after him. As he set sail and held his sharp, golden sights on the horizon he couldn’t shake the feeling that he wasn’t going to like what he found when he would eventually arrived at your current home.
You woke slowly, your body and mind heavy and hazy. Blinking through the unnatural stupor you tried to focus your vision but your eyes stung and the glaring bright light shining down on you made it difficult to come to grips with your surroundings. Weakly you pressed your forehead against the cool floor you were lying on and tried to brace your hands against it to push yourself up but your arms refused to move from behind your back. You pulled again, harder this time and now you heard the defiant clink of chains keeping them held in place. Your mind sharpened and you forced your body into action, now remembering someone coming to your home in the dead of night and instead of confronting you face to face threw some sort of gas bombs inside to knock you out faster than you could escape. Your nose wrinkled at the memory of the strong and awful smell still fresh as its affects still lingered in your body.
Behind you, you heard the sound of a door unlocking and multiple footsteps calmly walking in. One set of steps seemed to quicken in excitement and hurried closer. Suddenly you were pulled up and turned to become face to face with a grinning face, their eyes sweeping over you in appreciation and anticipation. “Its them! You actually did it!” He cheered while you struggled in the hold of the other person keeping you in place. Your glare intensified when the excited man tightly squeezed your face and forced you to look at him. “You’re even better up close…Now I really can’t wait for our wedding, you’re perfect.”
At that you pulled your face free and bit down hard on the repulsive man’s fingers and managed to kick him in the chest and send him backwards before the man’s obvious bodyguard and lackey threw you to the ground and planted his foot on your back to painfully hold you in place. Your ‘fiancé’ recovered and held his bleeding hand against his chest and pulled out a syringe from his pocket and scrambled forward. You struggled even though it was useless and tried to bite at his hand again as the needle broke your skin and the substance flooded your system. Just as quickly as the gas had worked the night before the injection was also taking effect. As your eyes grew heavy your only thought was of how you’d miss your arranged day to call Mihawk and you wondered if and when you’d ever see him again.
Your head was throbbing and body felt more drained than it had the last time you woke. With your arms kept chained behind your back for so long your muscles felt as though they were screaming at you for relief. You winced at the dreary organ music that began and echoed around you. You felt the sturdy hand on the back of your head and tried to move only to feel your ankles were held in place. Your captors had learned their lesson from the brief time you were conscious because now you were gagged too. Part of you wished you were unconscious still because the ceremony was boring you senseless and the man that was forcing you to be part of this charade of a wedding’s cologne nauseated you completely. You glared hard at the priest when he declared it was time for the vows.
If it weren’t for the obstruction in your mouth you would have bitten your tongue off the second you regained consciousness instead all you could do was stare daggers at the man intent to be your husband simply because you looked good to him. As he placed a hand dramatically on his chest to begin a full monologue for his vows you felt a shiver run up your spine and whipped your head over towards the door. Your heart raced and you tried to smile as the familiar presence washed over you in reassurance and a silent but deadly promise you would be fine. As the precise, whistling slice cut through the air, you stared in awe as the congregation screamed in panic as the front of the building was cut away to rubble and Mihawk entered, silent and his deadly gaze locked in the man who dared to attempt to take you from him.
Very rarely would Mihawk waste the use of a blade like Yoru on vermin like the men standing with you on the altar but on a special occasion like this, it seemed like a valid exception to the rule. As the church swiftly emptied of spectators who no longer wished to be apart of the farce, Mihawk shot forward. Before either man could decide whether to flee or try to beg for their lives the swordsman had already closed the distance and pulled you back in the same swing that separated their heads from their shoulders. In no time at all your chains were cut away and your mouth was free. Ignoring the aches and tension you gladly pulled yourself close to Mihawk as his hands encircled you. “I would have been here sooner had I received an invitation.”
You choked out a laugh and quickly pulled Mihawk into a quick but forceful kiss, only pulling back just enough to stare into his eyes lovingly. “If I’m ever to be in this position again I’d like to think you’re the one beside me in the first place and an invitation won’t be necessary.”
“Well we’re both here now. No time like the present right?” Mihawk smirked at you before casting a glance around the peacefully quiet and empty church. Just how he liked it, no fanfare, no extravagance, just you and him getting to say your vows to each other in private.
SABO
If anyone could relate to the strained and nearly suffocating ties that family could create, it was Sabo. The pressure of their expectations and demands regardless of what was best for their child and morally good was something he also lived through and managed to escape. If it hadn’t been for Ace, Luffy, and eventually Dragon and the Revolutionary Army he shuddered to think of the life his family could have forced him into had things gone their way and they’d thoroughly crushed his spirit. Had his parents kept him as their prisoner in his own home he would have been married off to the first royal to elevate them to a higher status. After his memories returned there were some nights he woke from nightmares of being chained into a loveless marriage with a spouse as cruel and soulless as his parents.
So when you ran away from your home and found safety in the Revolutionary Army, Sabo knew exactly what you’d been through. He was able to sit and listen and offer advice as best he could on days when your conscience for abandoning your family conflicted with you knowing deep down you’d made the right decision. After a few months of being on the base you began to settle more into your new life and the feeling of guilt and unease gradually slipped away but still you worried of what would happen if and when your family managed to track you down, they had the money and the resources after all. That was were you and Sabo differed. His family had believed he’d died when he was a child and never felt the need to find him. Your family however were more motivated to find you and as Chief of Staff he put everything he could into ensuring your whereabouts never became something they found out.
Then in no time at all you had been a part of the Revolutionary Army for over a year. In that time you’d developed your skills and became a valued part of the organisation, not someone simply seeking refuge. Sabo and Dragon had insisted you didn’t need to train like they did. You could have found a different role, one that kept you on the base that was just as important but you refused. You’d lost too much of your life and actually living because of the hold and fear your family had had over you. You wanted to prove your worth and actually play an active role to repay Dragon, Sabo and the rest of the Revolutionaries. Slowly and surely your confidence grew and you were an agent of impressive standing, but the one condition to you being active on missions was that you had to go with a partner or part of a group.
While your family had seemed to give up by this point, you knew never to be too careful. But after two years you became a little complacent. The second you had forgotten of your life with your family, they acted. When you were on an island wrapping up with a brief recon mission you were thrown to see your family’s head servant sit in the seat opposite you in the bar of the hotel you were meant to be observing your target at. Unable to leave because the risk it posed to the mission, and unable to cause a scene or act in a way that would blow your cover you had no choice but to sit there and listen to him smoothly talk to you, his presence alone dragging you back into a place in your mind you’d fought so hard to bury. “Your family is in crisis. They poured so much money and resources into trying to find you, you know?” He explained with a regretful, pained tone as you bit your lip and looked anywhere but his face. You told yourself to just look for your target and to shut out his words but it was harder than you thought it would be. “Lifelong friends distanced themselves as wild and evil rumours about what happened to you spread. Took such a toll on everyone as the weeks turned to months, then years. They have practically nothing left and now… No. I can already tell you don’t want to know. I won’t burden you with such information when its clear it won’t change their fate.”
From his judgemental tone and the slow, painful return of your sense of guilt at running away you reached out to stop him. “Tell me.”
Between the servant laying down the ground work and saying the right things to make you agree to seeing your parents and apologise for running away and causing them such distress, and your parents knowing just what to say to get their hooks into your mind again it was all too easy for them to have you right were they wanted you. No amount of training could simply and magically undo their hold over you. You had gotten stronger but the mental scars from your past were just a little stronger. Your parents had you again and they were intent you weren’t getting away from them unless it was on their say-so.
In less than a day they had your head twisted with emotional guilt and manipulation into somehow agreeing that you would finally marry into the family they’d made a match with just before you fled. This would be your way of making it up to them, to absolve yourself and earning their forgiveness by helping them return to their high standing. As you’d finished getting ready your father had sneered at you. “Besides if you’re too weak to do your duty you can always run away again, just make sure to do it after you’re married and your husband’s problem instead of ours.”
Now here you stood, trembling at the altar, head down and reverted back into their pawn, unable to move let alone speak. Your mouth felt dry and your tongue felt heavy and twisted as your breathing hitched with every panicked, quickened breath. You briefly twitched when your intended husband tightly gripped your hand in an attempt to make you ‘behave’ but you couldn’t focus and flinched when the shadow of the priest fell over you as he stood in front of you and your unwanted fiancé.
“Dearly beloved!” He called out grandly and your body went rigid in surprise, your head snapping up and eyes widening to see none other than Sabo standing before you. Had your mind finally broken? Were you imagining things in order to cope? “We’re gathered here today to celebrate a momentous occasion.” Without warning he looped his arm around you and pulled you back so you were protectively positioned behind him. Your eyes widened when from out of Sabo’s robes he produced his signature pipe and pointed it at the man you were meant to marry and then slowly at the rest of your family beginning to rise from their seats. “The momentous occasion being that this person behind me never has to look at any of you ever again. This sham of a ceremony isn’t happening.”
“Now wait just a minute!” Your father declared, neglecting his own sense of self-preservation as he charged towards the altar. He only stopped his advance when flames burst out and wrapped around the end of the pipe, the flames causing Sabo’s stare to glint dangerously. Your father swallowed slightly and continued, with less aggression than just a moment ago. “Obviously there’s some misunderstanding. They agreed to this wedding!”
“Yeah, I can already picture how you convinced them.” Sabo muttered darkly before turning to look at you, his gaze softening as he offered you a reassuring smile. Silently promising you he would protect you and keep you safe as he had since the first day you came into his life. “Now that I’m here you can answer honestly. What is it you want?”
Immediately you tightened your grip onto his arm that was still around you, feeling like you breathe easier now that he was here. “I want us to go home.” You told him, strength returning to your voice. “I don’t want to get married. Not to him.”
“Glad to hear it,” Sabo beamed happily at you, the smile dropping into a cold and threatening expression as he returned his attention onto the congregation. The fire under his control growing slightly. “Now, seeing as I’m still dressed as a priest will I be performing any funerals today or have you all the common sense to get out of my sight and never attempt something like this again?”
Faster than you thought possible everyone fled, even your stubborn parents and you let out a long, relieved sigh, moving closer to tightly hug Sabo. Immediately his flames subsided and he turned to hug you properly. While he didn’t show it he was relieved he’d managed to get to you in time but even if you had been forced to say your vows, it wouldn’t have stopped him from ever coming to your rescue.
LUFFY
As much as Luffy loved visiting every island he and the crew came across, nothing ever beat the islands were a festival or party were taking place. Before they’d even finished docking the Sunny at a safe spot he and the rest of the crew could already hear the fanfare, music, and excited chatter drifting through the air along with the scent of enticing food. When Luffy took a huge breath inward you laughed softly when he took too big of a breath in and choked harshly on confetti and flower petals that were also being carried through the wind. Lightly you rubbed his back when he caught his breath. “You okay Luffy?”
“Stupid flowers.” Luffy gasped out before recovering swiftly and grinning at you, back to his excited, cheerful self. “Would have been stupid if I died from that before getting to see the island. Nami! Can we go yet?”
“Almost, we still need to decide who stays with the Sunny.” Nami informed him as she leant against the railing. “Personally I’d love to go and shop away my stress after that last storm before we got here.” It was a fair request, the storm that you’d all sailed through had been a very draining one and it seemed only fair that Nami definitely take the time to relax and unwind.
Naturally Sanji leapt up to volunteer to join her and assist in carrying the mountain of bags she would definitely be returning with. It was also a no-brainer that Luffy would be going as there would be no way he’d stay on board if a festival with a lot of food on offer. Robin also wanted to observe the festival and study it for her own curiosity. In the end it was decided that Zoro, Chopper, and you would stay on the Sunny for now and let the others explore. You couldn’t help but notice Luffy’s pout when you offered to stay behind and tried your best to reassure him. “I went on the last two islands. It’s only fair I stay on the ship this time.” You smiled, playfully nudging him to the walkway. “We don’t know how long this festival is going to last, you don’t want to miss all the food, do you?”
With a grin you watched Luffy become fired up, focussed on making sure to get as much food as he could before the end of the festival and hurried, calling back a loud goodbye to you, Zoro and Chopper before he disappeared from sight. You let out a small, amused sigh as you leaned against the mast and lightly waved to the rest of the disembarking crew who were taking their time. Once they were out of sight you went to the Crows Nest to see what you could of the festival from the highest point of the ship while Zoro flopped onto the grass to nap while Chopper lay in the shade beside him. As you got comfortable you lay your cheek against your lightly folded arms on the windowsill and stared out at joyful sights of the city in the distance, already anticipating the excited and amusing stories the others would tell you when they eventually returned.
———
“Huh? A wedding?” Luffy asked through a mouth full of food looking around at all the activity. None of this seemed like any wedding he heard about. Although now that he thought about it, a wedding was just a big party really. “Whoever’s getting married must have a lot of friends. When does it start?”
“Well…” The stall vendor began with a thoughtful hum. “The last one took his Lordship three days to decide on his new spouse. We’re on day two at the minute, it’s just how it goes here.”
“Huh? He doesn’t know who he’s marrying either? This guy seems really stupid. Does he forget things a lot?”
“Please don’t speak rudely of our ruler.” The vendor frowned, giving Luffy the benefit of the doubt as he was a visitor and explained further. “Our ruler loves to be married and when the mood takes him he announces a festival to be held. In that time he chooses carefully who his next spouse will be. He’s so charismatic that as soon as he asks for your hand in marriage you fall in love with him immediately and accept. Some have even divorced those they’re already married to when his Lordship decided he wanted to marry them.”
As Luffy chewed his food he couldn’t help but pull a face. It seemed strange to him but then again Robin had explained to him that a lot of islands will have different thoughts and ways of doing things even if they didn’t necessarily make sense to him. As he took another bite of a new food to taste he shrugged and grinned. If it meant this island got to constantly throw parties like this and enjoy themselves this much, how bad could it really be? When a new smell from further down the street caught his attention, all thoughts of a Lord’s wedding and the purpose of the festival promptly left his mind.
It wasn’t until fireworks went off and horns blared loudly that caused the civilians who were used to this thing cheering out that Luffy finally remembered. He looked around and tilted his head curiously to see than nothing looked different. Where was the wedding going to happen? Weddings also meant more food but he wasn’t seeing anymore being brought out. Even though he didn’t want it to happen, at least at Sanji’s forced wedding to Pudding there was an enormous cake. Where was the cake for this wedding? Surely someone who loved getting married wouldn’t forget that. Getting confused about the strange festival again, Luffy turned to the first person he came across and asked.
Similar to the vendor they gave Luffy an equally peculiar look but explained. “We’re not important enough to attend the wedding or the feast.” They laughed softly while pointing out the large building at the top of the city. “The Lord and his betrothed will marry there with the other spouses, guards and important citizens in attendance.”
“So…no cake?” Luffy pouted before glaring up at the building. That didn’t seem fair. If the guy got married so often he wouldn’t miss some food this time around right? With his mind made up Luffy grinned and stretched his arm out, shooting through the air for the building pointed out to him. However he greatly over shot himself and instead of landing outside the building with the intention of sneaking in for food he instead crashed through the roof to the sounds of screams and yells of surprise.
Sitting up and shaking his head he blinked and looked towards were the loudest voice of all was yelling for his guards to attack. Luffy readied his fist but froze to see you standing next to the yelling man and immediately hopped to his feet and pushed the attacking guards aside with ease as he approached the altar. He knew something was wrong when even over the panic of the guests and attacking guards, you kept your gaze solely on the man Luffy guessed to be the Lord, an expression on your face he didn’t like. You didn’t look goofy and smiling like Sanji did when he ‘fell in love’ with another person. You didn’t even seem to notice him.
When Luffy got to the altar the Lord tried to take a swing at him that Luffy dodged without even needing to look and kicked him aside while grabbing your arm to stop you from hurrying to the Lord’s side. Carefully but firmly placing his hands on either side of your face, Luffy managed to get you to look at him and his eyes narrowed to see your gaze clouded over. “Hey! What’s going on with you? Why aren’t you on the Sunny?!”
“Huh? Oh hi Luffy.” You answered, your voice sounding almost sleepy. “I was on the Sunny but then Zoro insisted I go…Next thing I knew…” You paused to look at the Lord being helped to his feet by his other spouses who had the same weird look on their faces as you did. “He was asking me to marry him and I just…I just couldn’t say no.”
“You can say no!” Luffy urged you with a growing anger. This wasn’t like you, this was wrong. Something was going on and he knew it. “You don’t know him! You can’t marry him! You’re meant to stay with me and the others on the Sunny! Tell him no!”
At Luffy’s words he saw a flicker of life spark in your eyes and you seemed to shake slightly, trying to fight to come to your senses but something was holding you back. Slowly you shook your head, teeth grinding together as you tried to force your true feelings out. “Luffy…I want…”
“To marry me, right?” The Lord asked as he moved closer to you and Luffy spotted a strange stance that told him immediately the man was a Devil Fruit user. Refusing to let him touch you to continue keeping you under his influence he poured as much haki as he could into his arm and sent a fierce punch into the Lord’s chest, sending him crashing through the wall of the building and hurtling through the air and into the distance just beyond the city.
Without the Lord in proximity to you and the others in the room you and the other spouses, even some of the stronger looking guards began to shake off the effects of his strange ability. As your mind cleared you sighed in relief and hugged Luffy tightly, sinking into his hold when he immediately returned it. On the way back to the Sunny, he explained his side of the story and you laughed softly. “Thank goodness you’re motivated by food otherwise I would have been married to that creep.”
Even though Luffy laughed and agreed that you had his stomach to thank, his arm around you tightened its grip slightly. He got lucky today but knowing he almost lost you of all people in a way he hand’t expected made him certain to never let such a thing happen again.
