"A large-scale digital print installation on the elevated walkway spanning between the active Ballantyne's building and the red-zone The Crossing building. When standing at a particular vantage point on Colombo St the artwork visually deletes the walkway, while from other locations the viewer can distort their interpretation of the work as they move around the structure. The sky covering the structure references changing aesthetic of the CBD as the last of the damaged buildings are removed. The block of blue also acts a visual disconnect between the humming operations of the ReStart/Ballantyne's precinct and the silence of the red-zone awaiting rejuvenation."

HOMAGE TO LOST SPACES BY MIKE HEWSON

While many consider architecture to be a practice that bridges art and engineering, the multidisciplinary crossover is more often implicit. Yet, Mike Hewson drives this relationship home – literally and figuratively – as his latest installation project, Homage to Lost Spaces, takes place in his hometown of Christchurch, New Zealand. Hewson’s own transition from civil engineer to full-time artist is apparent in the way he uses the existing structure of the Christchurch Normal School, scheduled for demolition, as his canvas. The school that lay in ruins is reincarnated through Hewson’s work, which covers the building’s injuries and deformations with plywood, on which digital images of artists are projected and rendered. The ghostly and transcendent quality of these large-scale portraits are framed as an ode to the civic contribution of the school and its resident artists.

The New Zealand based artist, Mike Hewson, has created 10 massive mixed media optical installations in his homeland. After the February magnitude 6.3 earthquake, the city of Christchurch has allowed the artist to temporarily renovate designated areas that are slated to be demolished for reconstruction.

I would visit Mike Hewson's Homage to the Lost Spaces, 2012. In Christchurch, New Zealand, 10 massive optical illusion-inducing mixed-media art pieces by Mike Hewson pay homage to the former Christchurch Normal School which opened in 1876.

The building, completely renovated for apartment and retail use in 1981 and renamed Cranmer Courts, was damaged badly in the February 2012 magnitude 6.3 earthquake and it is now destined for demolition.

Before it is gone forever, Hewson wanted to pay homage to the building that used to house a vibrant community. He covered the total of 130 square meters of plywood with mixed-media images depicting artists and others who lived and worked in the building.
