When in Doubt
Write about nonsense and post pictures and videos, cause we all know that SOPA shit any happening anytime soon.
Things I Like This Week
1. ALICE'S LOUNGE
I am not partial to kareokee, nor do I know how to spell it, possibly, but the way it's set up at Alice's doesn't make it the main event. (Although at the Paddy's Christmas party, when a one Pat Berger or Nathan Bard were at the mic, it truly was) This past Monday I was there for said Christmas party and had a motherfuckin' ball. I had been there two occasion previous, but as it is a 4 am bar, I was a decent 75%-80% blacked out, so it was a nice little surprise to go there relatively sober the other night and discover things I hadn't remembered about the place. It has a pool table? You have to get buzzed in? You'd think a person would remember a thing like that. Well, that's how much fun I have here. My only complaint is that it's Belmont and Central Park, which is at the corner of what the hell and how will I ever get home?
2. SHERLOCK ON BBC
This is probably the best show ever made, outside of Lost and Battlestar Galactica (nerd points) and this past week I finally snagged the second season, which was bittersweet as it had an insane cliffhanger and now I'm focusing more and more on being careful while crossing streets as I don't want to die before the show returns next year. Do yourself a favor, if you haven't already, and netflix this shit. Also, Benedict Cumberland is a dreamboat. And that segways nicely to the next thing I like...
3. GIFS!!!!!
I only remember seeing this on people's myspaces or other sites and they initially struck me as annoying, because they don't stop moving and remind me of small children in that way. But now they strike me as fun and I'd like to figure out how to make them so next time you visit my blog, it will give you a siezure.
4. Mike Royko
I had been reading his book Boss, then got totally sidetrack by a guilty pleasure that goes by the name of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, and couldn't get back into it, but I wanted to read his writing so I grabbed a collection of his editorials and they were incredible. I don't know what exactly I had thought, I hate to admit my expectations were that I may be a bit bored with them, because I was thinking like a stupid girl of my generation would think, that articles from 1970 couldn't really be edgy because, like, didn't they, like, monitor that stuff? No, it's the opposite and his op-ed pieces are edgier than the edgy I know today because people who wrote for papers in the 70's were
1) Considered important, now today any idiot with a blog can just yammer on about...whatever...
2) That was an exciting time, when people marched and risked their lives to do it, not just camped and gave each other dreadlocks (I know deep down I agree with OWS and the police were a little rough on those hippies and their tents, but as a college professor once said to our class, "You're generation just cannot protest the way we did, it's just not the same") so his take on civil rights and Vietnam vets and all that stuff is stimulating
3) Today papers are all owned by Ruport Murdoch or some corporation and, as most obviously demonstrated with a place like Fox news, someone is in charge of what stories get what press. On that note, here's a little gem Mike Royko said on that topic,
"no self respecting fish would want to be wrapped up in a Murdoch paper."
At one time or another I'll repost some of my choice faves of articles I read by him. Also, he's from Chicago and wrote about Chicago and went to the Ale House in Chicago, so there's that.
Things I Don't Like This Week
1. Susan G Komen Foundation
I don't need to expand on this, but come on, bitches got to stick together.
2. Midnight In Paris
I feel so bad I didn't love this movie, because it's right up my alley. I like Woody Allen, I like everyone who's in it, I like the idea, but...it just didn't compel me as much as I assumed it would have. Maybe Owen Wilson in such a subtle, quiet humor type of role didn't convince me. I like Rachel McAdams as the bitchy fiance, but no where in the movie did I ever really feel like I understood their relationship. They just didn't seem to love, admire, respect or plain LIKE each other from the beginning so I kind of was annoyed anytime Owen Wilson's character was dealing with his real life, because it all seemed hard to believe. When he was hanging out with Hemingway and Stein, that to me, seemed more real than the whole set up he had in his normal life, and the overall effect left me bugged and unsatisfied.
3. Mitt Romney
I guess I should clarify, I don't like him any week, but he seems like he's probably going to be the guy who's going head to head with my brotha from anotha motha, Obama, so he's totes lame now. I also finally saw the awkward turtle moment he had with the gay veteran, and the gay veteran is totally right that Mitt is just super black and white on the subject, which doesn't shock me, BUT-
Haters on the right need to get over it. They can take baby steps if they have to. They need to just open their minds a little bit. I'm not asking them to take it up the ass, I'm just sayin' maybe start to think there's not standards on what marriage should be. I think we could all agree the story in Brokeback Mountain was a better testimony to love than the story in Keeping Up with the Kardasians. And to anyone who fears the worst shall happen and Mitt's gonna get in that office and drag us back a few years, we will still catch up. At some point, someday, gay people WILL get married and it won't seem strange. Once upon a time bitches used to say," someday, women WILL vote" and now they do. Once upon a time Black people used to say, "someday, Black people WILL vote and sit where the hell ever on a bus". and now they do. Once upon a time, I used to say, "someday I WILL drink whiskey" and now I do. I know I said I wanted to keep this blog non political, and I don't even feel like I'm being crazy in your face diligent about this. (Although, I'm 100% for gay marriage, by the way, but I'm 100% against myself getting married, I'd rather blow that money shoes). Whatever, my point was I wish this could be an issue the right side was started to allow to be a more grey area, because that's the way history simply goes. Shit moves forward. And it'll be a lot more pleasant for us all if you just sat back, shut up and nodded like I did when MC Hammer pants came back in fashion.
So much more disgusting than gay sex.
4. Twitter
Mostly because I still don't really understand how to use it for good, there is no one I seem to want to follow (Mary Kate Olsen never tweets, or I'm following a phantom Mary Kate) and I need more than 140 characters to express myself. Of course, I didn't really like facebook when I joined, and now it's every god damn commercial break that I'm checking it.
And lastly, in celebration of my friend, a one Trent Bowman of South Elgin, who so graciously credited me in pointing out a Saved by the Bell factoid in his blog, here is a GIF of Lisa in the music video of that song I can't remember the title of but I know all the lyrics too, when she was in her band the Sundaes
"Na na na na, na na na na" - Lisa Turtle
